Best Bets at the 2022 Genesis Invitational

If recent tradition holds, we will have a repeat winner at this year’s edition of The Genesis Invitational. Adam Scott won his second title here in 2020, and Bubba Watson won here in 2014, 2016, and 2018. A lot of the betting favorites have yet to win at Riviera Country Club though with one major exception. Dustin Johnson bested the field by five strokes in 2017, and that was despite shooting even par on Sunday. Aside from Johnson, the former champion with the shortest odds is Watson at 45-1.

Event Details

Event: The Genesis Invitational

Category: PGA Tour

Date: February 17-20, 2022

Location: Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, California

Past Winners

2021: Max Homa -12

2020: Adam Scott -11

2019: J.B. Holmes -14

2018: Bubba Watson -12

2017: Dustin Johnson -17

The Genesis Invitational brought us our biggest win last year. Max Homa was 66-1 to win this tournament, yet the Southern California native bested Tony Finau on the second hole of the playoff. Homa isn’t being given much of a chance to defend his title with odds of 60-1 per the current PGA Tour betting odds.

Jon Rahm is the overall favorite once again, but his odds are slowly rising each week. Rahm is now 10-1 to win The Genesis Invitational, and he has three T10 finishes and two T3 finishes in his four events this year.

The Course

This is one of the longest running tournaments on the PGA Tour. This event is unofficially known as the Los Angeles Open, and it has been held at 11 different golf courses in the Los Angeles area since it was founded in 1926. Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades has been the most common host though, and it has hosted this event in all but two years since 1973.

There have been no changes to this course since 2016. Great weather is expected throughout the tournament, but Riviera was one of the toughest places to play last year. According to Rob Bolton, it was one of the five toughest courses in terms of fairways hit, greens made in regulation, and proximity to the hole.

Best Bet to Win the Waste Management Phoenix Open: Patrick Cantlay +1200

Patrick Cantlay won four PGA Tour titles last season, but he is looking for his first victory this season. Cantlay won the ZOZO Championship, the Memorial Tournament, the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship last year. He has finished in the top ten in all four of the tournaments he has taken part in this year, and he was runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at the Waste Management Phoenix Open after losing a three-hole playoff.

Value Play to Win the Waste Management Phoenix Open: Viktor Hovland +2500

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Viktor Hovland over the last couple years. Hovland certainly lived up to the hype in his debut at Riviera last year, earning a T5 finish. He missed the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but Hovland won the World Wide Technology Championship and can use his power to put himself at an advantage here.
