Most of the top golfers in the world won’t be taking part in The Honda Classic this week. That gives the next tier of competitors on the PGA Tour a good chance of breaking into the win column, especially 2020 Honda Classic winner Sungjae Im. In his PGA Tour career, Im has only won two events, and his debut victory came here two years ago. Im is the overall favorite, but recent winners Keith Mitchell, Matt Jones, and Rickie Fowler are here to claim their second Honda Classic titles too.
Event Details
Event: The Honda Classic
Category: PGA Tour
Date: February 24-27, 2022
Location: PGA National Resort and Spa Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Past Winners
2021: Matt Jones -12
2020: Sungjae Im -6
2019: Keith Mitchell -9
2018: Justin Thomas -8
2017: Rickie Fowler -12
Matt Jones ran away from the field early at the 2021 Honda Classic. Jones shot a 61 on Thursday to lead this event from wire-to-wire last year. He shot a closing round 68 to beat Brandon Hagy by five strokes, winning his second PGA Tour event in the process. That tied Jones with Jack Nicklaus and Camillo Villegas for the biggest margin of victory at this event.
The Course
You won’t find many non-majors that are played on courses tougher than this one. The scoring average last year was 71.1 per round, and the winner hasn’t shot better than 14-under since Justin Leonard finished with a course record 264 back in 2003.
The rough is going to be an inch higher than it was last year. Wind is going to play a huge factor again, so that will lead to a lot of high scores throughout the week. The winner is going to need to take advantage of the relatively easy par 5s as there aren’t a lot of opportunities to birdie the par 3s and par 4s at Palm Beach Gardens.
Best Bet to Win The Honda Classic: Tommy Fleetwood +2800
Tommy Fleetwood has yet to win a PGA Tour event. He has five victories on the European Tour, but he has been unable to break through across the pond. Fleetwood hasn’t taken part in a PGA Tour event since October 2021, yet he has been great in his two previous appearances at The Honda Classic. We saw Fleetwood finish T4 at this course in 2018 and T3 in 2020.
Value Play to Win The Honda Classic: Denny McCarthy +6000
Denny McCarthy will be at an advantage this week. McCarthy is from Jupiter, so this is essentially a home course for him. He has yet to win a PGA Tour event either, but he has played very well over the last three months. McCarthy has five T15 finishes in his last seven PGA Tour events, and he ranks 13th in driving accuracy and 10th in scoring average.
