There will not be a repeat winner at this year’s PGA Championship. Phil Mickelson withdrew from the tournament late last week, ensuring that Brooks Koepka will be the most recent back-to-back champion for one more year. Mickelson would have been a big longshot by the golf betting odds even if he did compete after his improbable win last season, but we have seen some unlikely wins at this major over the years.

The overall favorite to win the PGA Championship is Scottie Scheffler. The winner of last month’s Masters is now the top golfer in the world, as he has won four titles on the PGA Tour this season. Scheffler is currently 12-1 to win the second major of the season, putting him just ahead of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy.
Rahm was the No. 1 golfer in the world before the Masters. He won the Mexico Open three weeks ago, and he has to be considered one of the strongest contenders as he is in good form and ranks first on the PGA Tour in greens hit in regulation.
The Course
Southern Hills Country Club was not originally supposed to host the PGA Championship this year. Trump National Bedminster was initially slated to be the site of the second major, but the tournament was moved as a result of the January 6 insurrection.
This course was recently redesigned in order to better reflect the natural beauty of Oklahoma. A lot of emphasis has been placed on the streams that meander through Southern Hills, and the greens are going to be very tricky. Fortunately, the fairways are wider, so it won’t be as difficult to birdie holes on this par-70 course that checks in at 7,365 yards.
Best Bet to Win the PGA Championship: Xander Schauffele +2200
Xander Schauffele has been in good form in recent weeks. He won the Zurich Classic by shooting -29 throughout the week, and he closed strong at the Byron Nelson after a first round 72. Schauffele made the cut with a 67 on Friday, and then crushed the course over the weekend with a 65 and 61. He is 16th in GIR and 4th in sand save percentage, and that will come in handy at Southern Hills.
Value Play to Win the PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka +3500
It’s never a bad idea to take a shot with Brooks Koepka. The four-time major champion is a monster at major tournaments, posting 16 top ten finishes at majors over the last eight years. Koepka has two wins and five T5 finishes in the last seven years at the PGA Championship, and that makes 35-1 a great value.
