Best Bets at the 2022 US Open

The US Open traditionally plays tougher than any other major. Low scores are typically hard to come by, and that will be the case this week at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts outside of Boston. The winners of the first two US Open tournaments held here both finished well over par, and only 11 golfers finished under par when Curtis Strange beat Nick Faldo in a playoff here in 1988.

Rory McIlroy is the favorite to win the US Open after winning the RBC Canadian Open with a 62 on Sunday. He is currently 11-1 per the golf betting odds, and the only golfer that is close is Justin Thomas at 12-1. The only other two golfers that are less than 22-1 are Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm, so those are the four players that most fans are picking to win at Brookline.

Event Details

Event: US Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: June 16-19, 2022

Location: The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts

Past Winners

2021: Jon Rahm -6

2020: Bryson DeChambeau -6

2019: Gary Woodland -13

2018: Brooks Koepka +1

2017: Brooks Koepka -16

Rahm claimed his first major last year when he beat Louis Oosthuizen by one stroke at Torrey Pines in the 2021 US Open. He was the No. 1 golfer in the world for most of this season, but he has since been surpassed by Scottie Scheffler in the rankings after Scheffler won the Masters. Justin Thomas could become the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world with a win this week though after the PGA Championship victory in May.

The Course

The Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in America. It is one of the five charter clubs that founded the United States Golf Association in the 1890s, and this is the 140th year anniversary of the club’s founding. This is one of the most difficult golf courses to play in the country as the fairways are narrow, the greens are small, and the rough is extremely punishing. Additionally, some of the rock outcroppings are in tough spots.

Best Bet to Win the US Open: Sam Burns +2800

There’s a lot of value in Sam Burns to win this major at 28-1. Burns has already won three events this season, and he has placed in the top ten a total of eight times. He wasn’t great at either the Masters or the PGA Championship, but this is the type of course where he can win. Burns is one of the top ranked golfers when it comes to bogey avoidance and adjusted scoring, and those factors figure to be huge this week.

Value Play to Win the US Open: Billy Horschel +6000

Billy Horschel has been downright awful in majors over the course of his career. Horschel has just one T15 finish in 33 major appearances, but he is currently the 11th ranked golfer on the PGA Tour. He won the Memorial two weeks ago, and he finished runner-up at both the Zurich Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Horschel ranks 10th in driving accuracy, so he is less likely to be punished by the rough than his competitors.
