Even casual fans that don’t typically care about golf will enjoy the Waste Management Phoenix Open. This event draws in more fans than any other sporting event in the world over the course of four days, and the 16th Hole is one of the most exciting venues in all of sports. Scenes from Happy Gilmore come to life as the traditional quiet respect for golf goes out the window, and golfers are cheered and jeered. Any fears that this raucous environment would scare away top golfers has been overblown as the best in the world will be at this week’s tournament.
Event Details
Event: Waste Management Phoenix Open
Category: PGA Tour
Date: February 10-13, 2022
Location: TPC Scottsdale, Scottsdale, Arizona
Past Winners
2021: Brooks Koepka -19
2020: Webb Simpson -17
2019: Rickie Fowler -17
2018: Gary Woodland -18
2017: Hideki Matsuyama -17
Once again, Jon Rahm is the overall favorite to win this week’s PGA Tour event. Rahm is the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, and he is also the early favorite to win the 2022 Masters in two months. He graduated from Arizona State, so this event is something of a homecoming for him although he has yet to win. Rahm has finished no worse than T16 but no better than T9 since his T5 finish as an amateur in 2015.
Brooks Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama will both be taking part in this tournament. Koepka is the defending champion and also won this event in 2015, while Matsuyama won the Waste Management Phoenix Open in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017. They have combined to win four of the last seven iterations of this event.
If recent history is any indication, we will see a playoff decide the winner. Four of the last six editions of the Waste Management Phoenix Open went to a playoff.
The Course
This course is mostly memorable because of the crowd and the atmosphere at the 16th Hole. The weather should be great for this year’s event as we aren’t expected to see any wind and temperatures will be in the 70s for most of the week. Big hitters tend to perform better here than at other courses.
Best Bet to Win the Waste Management Phoenix Open: Viktor Hovland +1600
It’s been a month since the last time Viktor Hovland teed up for a PGA Tour event, but he has to be considered one of the best bets this week. Hovland won the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, and he now has three PGA Tour victories at the age of 24. He missed the cut in his only previous appearance at TPC Scottsdale two years ago, but his power must be respected.
Value Play to Win the Waste Management Phoenix Open: Andrew Putnam +9000
Andrew Putnam has been playing well in recent weeks. Putnam has only won one PGA Tour event, but he has gone T27, T14, T6 in his last three events and finished T7 here in 2021. The 33-year-old isn’t a big hitter, yet he has the accuracy to stay out of trouble.
