If recent history is any indication, we will see a player win his first PGA Tour event this weekend at the Sanderson Farms Championship. The last six winners of this event were debutantes, as this tournament is one that the top golfers in the world usually skip. Almost half of the field at this year’s Sanderson Farms Championship has yet to win a PGA Tour event, so it’s worth scrolling down the list to look at golfers with long betting odds.
Event Details
Event: Sanderson Farms Championship
Category: PGA Tour
Date: October 1-4, 2020
Location: Country Club of Jackson, Jackson, Mississippi
Past Five Winners
2019: Sebastian Munoz -18
2018: Cameron Champ -21
2017: Ryan Armour -19
2016: Cody Gribble -20
2015: Peter Malnati
Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win the Sanderson Farms Championship at 9-1. This will be his first event in three weeks, as he tested positive for COVID-19 and had to miss the US Open two weeks ago. Scheffler was on a tear prior to contracting the virus, finishing in the top five in three of his last four events. The next favorites are Sungjae Im at 12-1 and Will Zalatoris at 16-1, while every other golfer is at least 25-1.
The Course
It’s going to take a score of -15 or better to win this year’s event. The last ten winners of the Sanderson Farms Championship finished at least 15-under, and eight of the last ten champions were at least -18. This is one of the easiest courses on the PGA Tour, but it does have some tricky holes. The par three No. 4 rarely sees birdies, and the par four No. 6 is the most difficult hole for club members. The last four holes in the homestretch can be quite challenging too, including the memorable No. 16.
Value Play to Win the Event: Xinjun Zhang +5000
We’ve seen some strong play out of Xinjun Zhang over the last few weeks. He finished T14 at the Safeway Open, and he was T11 at Corales last week. Zhang was in the mix coming into the final day of both events, but he sputtered on Sunday with a 70 and a 74. He wasn’t too impressive in his first appearance at the Sanderson Farms Championship last year, yet he made the cut, and he is worth a few dollars at these odds.
Top 5 Prop: Sebastian Munoz +650
This tournament has never had a back-to-back winner, but Munoz is in good form. He made the cut at the US Open two weeks ago, and he had two T8 finishes in his two tournaments prior to that. Munoz crushed this course with a 63 on Saturday last year, so we know what he’s capable of in Jackson. We probably won’t see a repeat winner, but he could sneak into the top five.
