UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards 2 Parlay
Kamaru Usman is the most dominant men’s fighter in the UFC today. Usman is the longest reigning men’s champion in the UFC, and he has successfully defended the UFC Welterweight Championship five times. A win over Leon Edwards on Saturday night would be his 20th straight victory, ensconcing his run has one of the most dominant in the history of the promotion. His long track record of success has led to early action coming in on Usman to defend his title once more, lifting the UFC betting odds in this fight from -325 to -370 in favor of Usman.
UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards 2 is set to kick off on Saturday, August 20, 2022, from Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. The prelims will be broadcast at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and ESPN, while the main event will start at 10 p.m. ET promptly on ESPN+ PPV.
UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards 2 Picks
Kamaru Usman -370 vs. Leon Edwards
The first fight between Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards happened almost seven years ago. Usman won a unanimous decision over Edwards in his first fight in the UFC. Little did anyone know at the time what a dominant force Usman would turn out to be as a welterweight, posting a sterling 14-0 record at the top level of MMA.
Edwards may have been discouraged by the loss at the time, but he is 9-0-1 in his 10 fights since that defeat. He has wins over Donald Cerrone, Rafael dos Anjos, Vicente Luque, and Nate Diaz, and the only non-win during that run was a No Contest against Belal Muhammad that was called without a winner due to an accidental eye poke.
This is going to be a very tough match for Edwards to win. Edwards has not defeated an opponent ranked in the top five in the UFC, while Usman has plenty of experience against elite foes. Usman has superior wrestling skills and constantly pushes the attack, so Edwards is likely to be smothered for much of the fight.
Merab Dvalishvili vs. Jose Aldo Over 2.5 Rounds -220
Although Merab Dvalishvili finished Marlon Moraes in his last fight, his previous six wins all came by unanimous decision. Dvalishvili doesn’t have a ton of finishing power, but he does have a high motor and lots of stamina, allowing him to outpoint his opponents.
He will be facing the greatest featherweight in UFC history in Jose Aldo. We saw Aldo defend his UFC Featherweight Championship seven times over the course of five years before losing the belt. He reclaimed the title with a win over Frankie Edgar, but two losses to Max Holloway and a loss to Alexander Volkanovski led to Aldo making the move to bantamweight. Aldo has won three straight fights by unanimous decision in this division, so that bodes well for the over.
Yanan Wu vs. Lucie Pudilova Under 2.5 Rounds +275
This may seem like a head scratching bet at first. Lucie Pudilova has had seven straight fights go the distance, and 15 of her 20 fights have been decided by the judges. Yanan Wu has seen three straight bouts go the distance too, but she lost all three of those fights and will be more aggressive as a result. Wu is 1-4 in fights that go the distance, but 11-1 in bouts that are decided early so this is a nice price considering what her strategy is likely to be on Saturday.
