After getting started with a bang on Yas Island, the UFC took last week off in order to get everything set up back in Las Vegas. Dana White and everyone else will be ready to resume top shelf MMA this week with a headline bout featuring Alistair Overeem taking on Alexander Volkov. Frankie Edgar and Cory Sandhagen will face off in the co-main event, and there will be plenty of buildup for UFC 258 next week.
The UFC is back at the UFC Apex center in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC Fight Night 184: Overeem vs. Volkov on Saturday, February 6, 2021. This event will be available exclusively through ESPN Plus with the prelims starting at 5 p.m. ET and the main card getting underway at 8 p.m. ET.
UFC Fight Night 184: Overeem vs. Volkov Betting Odds
Alistair Overeem +163
Alexander Volkov -188
Overeem is now in his 40s, but he can still compete at a high level as one of the most seasoned fighters in MMA history. This will be his 67th professional MMA fight, and he has a chance to end his career with 50 wins. Overeem is currently 47-18-1, and he is 12-7 since joining the UFC.
At this point, the Demolition Man is essentially a gate keeper. Two of Overeem’s last three losses were to Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik, essentially anointing them as contenders. Meanwhile, his wins over Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai halted their climb up the heavyweight ladder.
Volkov is ranked one spot below Overeem in the official UFC rankings. However, the oddsmakers have made him a moderately priced favorite on Saturday. He has alternated wins and losses over his last four fights, losing to Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes, but beating Greg Hardy and Walt Harris. Most (21) of his 32 wins have come by knockout, so he has a great chance to knockout Overeem given most of the veteran’s losses have come by KO.
A bet on Overeem is probably the prudent play, but Volkov to win by knockout isn’t a bad choice either.
Frankie Edgar +330
Cory Sandhagen -400
If Sandhagen wins this fight, he is likely to get his first bantamweight title shot. He would have received his first shot last year if he had defeated Aljamain Sterling at UFC 250 in June, but he lost by first-round submission. That was just the second loss of his career and his first loss in the UFC. Sandhagen bounced back with a convincing win over Marlon Moraes in October.
Edgar has been looking to reclaim a UFC title ever since he lost his lightweight belt to Benson Henderson at UFC 144 almost nine years ago. He has lost five title fights since that point, but he continually was among the top contenders at either lightweight or featherweight. Edgar moved to bantamweight for one last attempt at a title in the summer. We saw him win a narrow split decision over Pedro Munhoz in August, and his performance there didn’t inspire the oddsmakers.
Marion Reneau +169
Macy Chiasson -194
Chiasson is 29 years old, but she is still at the beginning stages of her career. She has only taken part in seven professional fights and didn’t join the UFC until a little less than two years ago. Her first four fights with the promotion have gone well, as she is 3-1, and she earned a Performance of the Night bonus for her second-round TKO of Sarah Mosas.
Meanwhile, Reneau has lost three straight fights. All three of those losses came by unanimous decision, sending her falling down the women’s bantamweight rankings. She is almost 44 years old, so the oddsmakers think she is well past her prime at this price.
