After Disappointing FIBA Performance, Star-Studded Team USA Favored To Win Gold At 2020 Olympics
There is no doubt about which nation has produced the best basketball players in the world. Is there any doubt about whether that nation is primed to defend its status as the best in the world on the international stage once again in 2020? The United States will head to the 2020 Olympics as the three-time defending gold medal winner. Despite disappointing in their latest tournament appearance, the Americans are still the obvious sports betting favorite to dominate on the big stage once again when they head to Tokyo. Here is a closer look at whether Team USA will win gold in the 2020 Olympics.
WHAT WENT WRONG FOR U.S. IN 2019 FIBA TOURNAMENT?
Before looking towards Tokyo, it makes sense to review what went wrong for the United States in China. Team USA finished a disappointing seventh at the 2019 FIBA World Cup. While a lot of experts were caught off guard by how poorly that team performed, it’s important to put that result in perspective. After all, only four of the 35 players originally selected for the 2020 Olympics pool participated in the FIBA World Cup. A quick look at the names that didn’t go to China but have expressed a desire to compete in the Olympics offers some perspective on why the USA is an overwhelming favorite to win gold. This should be a roster filled with All-Stars; the 2019 FIBA roster was still good but was mostly cobbled together from C-listers.
WILL TEAM USA WIN GOLD IN 2020?
YES -1000
NO +500
The list of players that didn’t participate in the 2019 FIBA World Cup that in all likelihood will compete in the 2020 Olympics includes Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Paul George, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. That group of superstar talent alone is good enough to make the United States a lock to win gold assuming that they all come together.
So what can stop the United States from winning it all? Themselves. The 2016 Olympics proved that the U.S.A is in a class of its own when it comes to basketball at the highest level. The only opponent that even came close to competing with them in Rio is Spain. However, that Spanish crew isn’t as good as it was at the time with Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Jose Calderon and more getting older. The same is true of France and Argentina, whose core player has aged without the necessary quality replacements available to carry the torch for them. In fact, one of the most interesting potential contenders heading in to 2020 might be Canada, which will be led by Jamal Murray, Dillon Brooks, R.J. Barrett, Nik Stauskas, Tristan Thompson and more. However, for all of the talent that the next generation of Canada Basketball has produced, they don’t even come close to having the talent to keep up with the United States.
While the obvious answer for this prop bet is overwhelmingly that the United States will win gold in 2020, whether or not to bet on that prop depends on the individual. If you can afford to risk $10,000 to win $1000, then it might be worth betting this prop since the U.S. is virtually a lock to win gold. However, if the value isn’t good enough, then you might be better off staying away altogether. Either way, the U.S. men’s basketball team is primed to win gold once again in the 2020 Olympics.
