As we head into the final month of the regular season, several teams have emerged as the
favorites to win the NBA title this spring. Boston and Denver have two of the deepest lineups in
the league but there are several other teams looking to play spoiler as the chase for the Larry
O’Brien Trophy is about to begin.
TOP CONTENDERS
Boston Celtics (+190)
For the better part of the regular season the Celtics have had the best record in the NBA.
Boston is near the top in several categories including first in rebound, second in points, and
second in 3-point shooting percentage. The Celtics are led by Jayson Tatum who’s averaging
27 points, 8 rebounds and almost 5 assists per game. Boston has made the Eastern
Conference finals in 5 of the last 7 seasons and are poised to make it 6 this spring.
Denver Nuggets (+310)
The Nuggets are the defending champions and have one of the deepest rosters led by Nikola
Jokic who is averaging 26 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists this season and is shooting
58% from the floor. Jokic is on his way to winning his third MVP award and looking for
back-to-back NBA titles. Even though the West is stacked many believe Denver is the team to
beat in the postseason.
IN THE MIX
Los Angeles Clippers (+700)
Don’t look now but the Los Angeles Clippers are finally becoming the force many thought they
could be. Since mid-November, L.A. has the third best record in the league moving themselves
up the standings. After years of disappointment and flaming out in the playoffs, many believe
this team could finally reach a Final. Kawhi Leonard is the healthiest he’s been in recent years,
and the Big 3 (Leonard, James Harden, Paul George) are coexisting together on the floor. But
none of this matters if there isn’t playoff success.
Milwaukee Bucks (+750)
The Milwaukee Bucks have the second best record in the East despite firing their coach midway
through the season. Doc Rivers takes over and has the Bucks on track for a deep playoff run.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lilliard are still two of the best. For the Bucks, it’ll all come
down to coaching in the playoffs as Rivers has recently been known more for playoff collapses
than success.
LONGSHOTS
Los Angeles Lakers (+3300)
Since winning the In-Season Tournament in December the Lakers have been essentially playing
.500 basketball. But you can’t count out a team with Lebron James and Anthony Davis. As
long as they get in, even as a play-in team, the Lakers still have a chance.
Golden State Warriors (+4000)
It appears the Warriors championship window is starting to close. Steph Curry is 36 and other
key players from their dynasty like Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have transitioned into
more role players. But the priority for Golden State is locking down a spot, which most likely is a
play-in berth.
Miami Heat (+4000)
The Heat are the defending Eastern Conference champions having reached the final as the No.
8 seed last season. They are once again in the mix but have reworked the roster by trading
Kyle Lowry and bringing in Terry Rozier. If they can get hot in the playoffs again, Miami could be
turning up the heat on its rivals.
