8 Best Tier 3 Edge Rushers Hitting the Market This Offseason Part 3

BY ADAM GREENE

This is it. We’ve reached the end of our long road through the available edge rushing free agents, counting down 22 guys when it’s all over, each one (with the exception of Yannick Ngakoue and Matthew Judon) available for purchase at the right price.

Our final installment includes a Super Bowl champion and perennial Pro Bowler as well as guys that flashed stardom, only for something to seemingly go all wrong.

6. TERRELL SUGGS, OLB, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

2019: 40 tackles, nine for a loss, 6.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, four passes defended

Suggs likely has a gold jacket in his future when he finally decides to hang up his cleats and, you never know, this might be the offseason he makes the call. After spending all but one of his 17-year NFL career in Baltimore with the Ravens, Suggs played for two teams last year. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs at the trade deadline, earning his second Super Bowl ring.

Suggs was still productive and still a serviceable member of the Chiefs defense, though he’s long removed from the guy who racked up double digit sacks in seven of his seasons and came close in four more.

Where he should end up: Baltimore Ravens

My guess is if Suggs plays, this will be it for him. The Ravens could use the pass rush help at the right price and there’s no reason not to make one more run with the team that drafted him at No. 10 overall out of Arizona State back in 2003.

7. EMMANUEL OGBAH, DE, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

2019: 32 tackles, six for a loss, 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, three passes defended

Like Suggs, the Chiefs brought in Ogbah as a mercenary for a single season that paid off for everybody. He started four games and played in 10 for Kansas City during the regular season and was worth the roster spot.

Ogbah’s a young guy who’s never lived up to his second-rounder status when the Cleveland Browns drafted him out of Oklahoma State in 2016. This is likely his top out level in the NFL, which should keep him on a roster, but not earn him a long term deal anytime soon.

Where he should end up: Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks will be building their pass rush out of cast-offs and draft picks this season after likely losing both starting defensive ends from last year. Ogbah is good enough to spot start and can be a solid back up in a 4-3. Ultimately, Seattle needs to bring in the bodies because the NFC West is not slowing down on of offense anytime soon.

8. EZEKIEL ANSAH, DE, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

2019: 18 tackles, three for a loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two passes defended.

The mystery of Ezekiel Ansah deepens once again. Three years ago, this kid looked like one of the premier 4-3 defensive ends in football. Two years later he’s amassed all of 6.5 total sacks and started just three games (playing in 18).

But that mystery was there when he was in Detroit. After a solid first two seasons, Ansah broke out with a 14.5 sack campaign in 2015. He followed it with a two-sack year in 13 games in 2016. Make sense of that.

In 2017, he bounced back with 12 sacks. In 2018, he went right back to the basement with four. His 2.5 as a free agent acquisition of the Seahawks last year kept him there.

Something’s up and Ansah’s weird drop-offs have cost him a lot of money and will continue to do so, but somebody can get the most out of this guy. Maybe.

Where he should end up: New England Patriots

Bill Belichick always takes a chance on these kinds of players, to varying degrees of success. He’s also not afraid to cut them or ship them out if they don’t work out. Ansah’s probably getting his last real shot to do something in the league, regardless of where he ends up. He better make the most of it.
