Some teams rebuild and some morph on the fly. The Baltimore Ravens were the latter last season as they went from old, boring and slow with Joe Flacco and a dusty offense, to electric and exciting with rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The youth movement continued into the offseason as the team allowed a number of veterans to walk in free agency while replenishing with a couple of free agents along with promising, young talent in the NFL Draft.

Offseason Changes

In: Earl Thomas, Mark Ingram, Marquise Brown, Shane Ray, Tony Jefferson

The Ravens are now fully Lamar Jackson’s team. His performance in 2019 and his growth as a passer will determine how far they go. However, there’s plenty of help around him as Ingram and rookie runner Justice Hill look like a strong tandem, while the wide receiving corps has some quality young pieces in rookies Marquise Brown and Miles Boykin, and second-year tight ends Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews.

The defense took a lot of hits, so they could be due for a regression. They lost almost all of their linebacking corps as Mosley, Suggs and Smith each signed elsewhere. The secondary will be strong – especially with Thomas in the fold – but the pass rush took a huge hit.

Jackson performs at a high level. He might not be a fully polished passer, but he is a lethal runner in the open field. He has already shown that he can make the first tackler miss in open space. He doesn’t have to be an incredible passer to win games but if he has improved, this will be a tough offense to stop. Remember that Jackson is just 22 years old. He’s still very young and growth should be expected.

On defense, the Ravens did lose a lot but this team has always been a talent factory in terms of finding overlooked draft picks and developing them into quality starters. If that’s the case, this might still be the best team in the AFC North.

The Ravens will go under 8 wins if…

Jackson doesn’t improve as a passer. Yes, he’s an excellent runner but last year, Jackson and this run-first offense caught teams off-guard. They’ll be prepared for him this year.

On defense, they’ll struggle if the athleticism of Earl Thomas – coming back from multiple injuries – is greatly diminished. Baltimore plays in a division with Ben Roethlisberger, Baker Mayfield and Andy Dalton. If they can’t rush the passer – Smith and Suggs combined for 15 of the team’s 43 sacks last year – their defense could fall out of the Top 10.

Everyone is hyping up the Cleveland Browns and many feel the Pittsburgh Steelers are being overlooked, which means this Ravens team isn’t getting much attention. That’s a good thing. Jackson is a rising star in the league and the Ravens offensive line and passing game should be improved. The Browns have issues on their offensive line while the Steelers are often too hot and cold. Don’t be surprised if Baltimore gets into the playoffs either as the division winner or as a Wild Card.

The Ravens will finish second if the Browns do not live up to the massive hype. The Browns have a lot of raw talent, but they have very little experience and will be facing enormous pressure this season. This is a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2007. Still, I expect either the Browns or Steelers to win the division and Ravens to come in second.
