With this year’s Super Bowl in the rearview mirror, the focus now shifts to the NFL offseason, free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft. With that, oddsmakers have released betting lines on who’ll win the 2020 Super Bowl and it’s this year’s champ, the Kansas City Chiefs, who have opened as next year’s favorite.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
SUPER BOWL ODDS: +500
It is natural to make the Chiefs the favorite after they won the Super Bowl. However, Kansas City was not the best team in its conference in the regular season; the Baltimore Ravens were. Kansas City was the beneficiary of Baltimore losing to the Tennessee Titans at home in the divisional playoff round. That enabled the Chiefs to host the Titans in the AFC Championship Game instead of having to go to Baltimore, where they very likely would have lost.
Even so, the fact that they have Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and an offense that figures to be electric, they’ll be among the top teams in the NFL next season.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
SUPER BOWL ODDS: +600
The 49ers had the best offensive and defensive lines in the NFL this past season. That’s why they won 13 games, got home-field advantage in the NFC, and made the Super Bowl one season after losing a double-digit amount of games. Coach Kyle Shanahan is extremely sharp. He has this team headed in the right direction. Nick Bosa is already a star as a rookie pass rusher in the NFL. So much about the 49ers’ outlook is bright and if Jimmy Garoppolo can moderately improve as a quarterback, this team could be the favorite to win it all.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
SUPER BOWL ODDS: +800
It has to be noted that the Baltimore Ravens had 12 Pro Bowl players this past season, more than any other NFL team. Will Baltimore have 12 more Pro Bowl players this upcoming season? It’s hard to say, but even if Baltimore gets “only” 10 of those players onto a Pro Bowl roster, the Ravens will be a nightmare for other AFC teams in 2020. Lamar Jackson is the 2019 NFL MVP and he’s still just 23 years old. He will be able to spend another year getting better and polishing his craft. If the Ravens draft or pick a few good receivers, Jackson should flourish yet again, and that leads to Baltimore being a very good Super Bowl choice.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
SUPER BOWL ODDS: +1600
The Chargers’ price seems to include anticipation of a new and very good quarterback. If Tom Brady does, in fact, sign with the Chargers, then they might actually be worth this price. Until then, this seems like a bit of a stretch. We have to wait to see what unfolds. Then we can size up the betting price for the Chargers a little better.
DALLAS COWBOYS
SUPER BOWL ODDS: +1400
It is true that new Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has won a Super Bowl, while former head coach Jason Garrett has not. Yet, McCarthy was a very cautious coach for much of his time with the Green Bay Packers. Is he really that much of an upgrade as the new head coach in Dallas? Will players play hard for him or tune him out? It ultimately seems the Cowboys are too volatile and unpredictable to assess at this time.
