Dolphins Enter Free Agency With Most Cap Space, Colts Second

Now that the calendar has flipped to March, that means we’re just two weeks away from the start of free agency. However, a lot of deals are going to be agreed upon in the next week or so with a wink and a nudge, and then the final ink will get dried once free agency officially begins.

NFL futures are going to change drastically once some players start bouncing around. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the teams with the most cap space right now as they figure to be the biggest players.

MIAMI DOLPHINS ($88 M CAP SPACE)
SUPER BOWL LV ODDS: +10000

The Dolphins have just over $88 million in cap space, with $119 million in active cap spending and $12 million in dead cap money. The Dolphins might try to land their quarterback of the future, but they stashed a lot of draft picks from their 2019 moves, which included the trade of Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Miami has a lot of holes on its roster, but getting a premium offensive lineman would seem to be at the top of the Dolphins’ list in free agency. They allowed the most sacks in the NFL last season (58). That means someone like former Tennessee Titans tackle Jack Conklin could be appealing to them.

Miami will probably draft a quarterback, so getting an elite lineman in free agency would set up the roster in a way which would give the incoming quarterback more encouragement about his situation. If all they do is boost the offensive line, their futures won’t change much.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS ($86 M CAP SPACE)
SUPER BOWL LV ODDS: +3300

The Colts have just over $86 million in cap space, with $149 million in active cap spending and $6.7 million in dead cap money. Their Super Bowl futures can change a lot depending on who they land and how they spend their money.

They are going to go after a splashy quarterback in free agency – possibly like Tom Brady or Philip Rivers – but their defense lost steam late last season. Getting a high-end pass rusher is also in their best interests, so expect them to make a play for a disruptive edge rusher as well as a quarterback. The Colts can also use another wide receiver; their lack of quality depth at the position was exposed in 2019.

BUFFALO BILLS ($82 M CAP SPACE)
SUPER BOWL LV ODDS: +3300

The Bills have over $82 million in cap space, with $140 million in active cap spending and only $1 million in dead cap money. This is a team that won 10 games last season and went to the playoffs. Many feel they could be better in 2020 and win less games, though, so that’s a telling sign.

They can use more help along the offensive line in support of quarterback Josh Allen, and they can use more wide receivers to give Allen higher-end targets to throw to. Their success or failure in 2020 is likely to be tied to internal growth, for the most part. They’ll need guys like Allen, Devin Singletary and Dawson Knox to continue to develop. However, finding a true No. 1 wideout like A.J. Green or Amari Cooper would give this unit a big boost.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS ($80 M CAP SPACE)
SUPER BOWL LV ODDS: +4000

The Bucs have almost $80 million in cap space, with $125 million in active cap spending and a mere $130,000 in dead cap money. A quarterback figures to be a big part of their plans, although they haven’t decided on whether Jameis Winston is going to be their man in the future or not. If not, they’ll go after Philip Rivers. The Bucs need to figure out their answer at quarterback. They have quality wide receivers, so an offensive lineman would be an important investment for them. The secondary is another huge need as is running back.

The early rumors have them paired with David Johnson, Rivers and cornerback Byron Jones. We’ll see if they’re able to make these moves. If so, they’ll shoot up the board in terms of the futures.

DALLAS COWBOYS ($77 M CAP SPACE)
SUPER BOWL LV ODDS: +1800

The Cowboys have roughly $77 million in cap space, with $140 million in active cap spending and nearly $2 million in dead cap money. However, that’s a bit of a mirage. They’re going to have to shell out big bucks to keep Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper in a Cowboys uniform. After that, they’ll have to determine what to do with Byron Jones, although it doesn’t look like the Cowboys can keep all three.

Dallas clearly needs to improve as last year’s team underachieved. It’s unclear how they’ll do that, though, even if they only re-sign Prescott and Cooper because they won’t have a lot of extra money floating around beyond that.
