Stidham Favored To Be Next Patriots Starting Quarterback

The NFL offseason is now heating up, with NFL Free Agency drastically reshaping the landscape of professional football, even though no one can say for sure if the 2020 season will start on time due to the coronavirus. Nevertheless, the big news has made its way across the world: Tom Brady will not stay with the New England Patriots, ending one of the greatest single-team careers in the history of sports. The Patriots now need a new presence under center, and everyone will be very interested to see which player Bill Belichick ends up with. Let’s consider five primary options for the Patriots:

JARRETT STIDHAM
ODDS: +250

It is true that Stidham, as the backup to Brady and the person who knows the Belichick system, has a chance to become the Week 1 starter in 2020, but this is only because no other option has been found. Will Belichick really entrust the season to an unproven quarterback instead of shopping for a more proven veteran? Maybe Stidham will be the Week 1 guinea pig, the test experiment which shows Belichick where he needs to turn… but why would the Patriots sacrifice one game with Stidham?
It seems hard to believe he will be the Opening Day starter in Foxborough.

ANDY DALTON
ODDS: +350

This is the most reasonable choice if we’re being honest. Dalton is not extremely old, but he has experience. He hasn’t won a playoff game, but he has been to the playoffs multiple times. He has never truly fulfilled his potential, but he hasn’t had the best coaching possible. Dalton is a player Belichick could look at and view as a quarterback he can mold into a winner. Dalton has not suffered because of talent; he has suffered because of poor decision making and a lack of innovation on his coaching staffs in Cincinnati. New England’s offense could certainly function well with Dalton, who has a much stronger arm than anything Tom Brady showed last year.

DEREK CARR
ODDS: +600

It is necessary to consider Derek Carr as a possibility, now that Marcus Mariota has moved to Las Vegas to join the Raiders. Carr might seek a fresh start, and his upside might convince Belichick to make a play for him as the Patriots’ new quarterback. The Raiders probably want to keep both Carr and Mariota, though, and see who shows better in training camp.

JAMEIS WINSTON
ODDS: +2000

If Belichick thinks he can take an erratic quarterback and turn him into a success story – which is something he has done with defensive backs and wide receivers and other players who struggled to fit in with other teams before coming to New England – the idea of Jameis Winston going to Foxborough is not absurd. Sure, Winston is a walking, talking turnover factory, having thrown 30 interceptions last season. Yet, Belichick could teach him how to process the game, and if that did happen, the Patriots would have a very talented leader of their offense. This move could work out if the Patriots pursued it.
