SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL WEEK 13: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS AT GREEN BAY PACKERS

BY ADAM GREENE

Cris Collinsworth is already oiling up his buns in anticipation of an epic slide-in as the Kansas City Chiefs travel to historic Lambeau Field to take on the suddenly relevant Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football.

The two franchises have only faced off 14 times before, but their first match up was historic as the Packers knocked off the Chiefs, 35-10, in a little game called Super Bowl I. That’s right, these two squads met up in the first-ever Super Bowl. We’re talking Bart Starr vs. Len Dawson. We’re talking Vince Lombardi, the guy they named the Super Bowl Trophy after playing the team owned by Lamar Hunt, the guy for which they named the AFC Title Trophy.

It was also the Super Bowl rematch we were pulling for over the five previous seasons that Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay kept screwing up by blowing it in the playoffs. In fact, to this day, Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes have never faced off on the football field. We had a chance the last time these teams squared up back in 2021 but something went wrong there — mainly Aaron Rodgers lied about his vaccination status, caught COVID-19, missed a game Green Bay would have won if he’d been able to play, and was punished in a ridiculously half-assed way by the NFL. A veritable slap on his ivermectin covered wrist. Anyway, the Pack lost 13-7.

Mahomes was 20 of 37 for 166 yards, one touchdown and no picks in the offensively challenged contest. Darrel Williams (now with the New Orleans Saints) rushed 19 times for 70 yards. Travis Kelce, aka Mr. Pfizer and also Mr. Swift (which is the one that REALLY bothers Rodgers) caught five passes for 68 yards and a TD.

Jordan Love was not impressive in one of his first outings for the Pack, finishing 19 of 34 passing for 190 yards, one touchdown and a pick. Aaron Jones had 12 carries for 53 yards. Davante Adams (now with the Las Vegas Raiders) caught six passes for 42 yards.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS AT GREEN BAY PACKERS (+6.5, O/U: 42)

Location: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisc.

Broadcast: NBC

Kickoff: Dec. 3, 8:20 p.m.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (8-3)

After losing two of their last three heading into last week, the Chiefs had a “get right” game against the Las Vegas Raiders, leaving Allegiant Stadium with a 31-17 victory. Patrick Mahomes was 27 of 34 passing for 298 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked once. Isiah Pacheco rushed 15 times for 55 yards and two scores. Rashee Rice caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Travis Kelce harnessed the power of his Pfizer Swiftiness to haul in five balls for 91 yards. The defense sacked Aidan O’Connell once.

GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-6)

The Pack got a monster victory last week on Thanksgiving, embarrassing the Detroit Lions 29-22 on their own home field on what was supposed to be a national day of Lions love. Instead, it became the day of Jordan Love as he finished 22 of 32 passing for 268 yards, three touchdowns with no picks. He scrambled three times for 39 yards and was not sacked. Christian Watson caught five passes for 94 yards. The defense sacked Jared Goff three times.

THE PICK

It’s fun to see Green Bay back in the playoff race, especially with Aaron Rodgers crying in his ayahuasca in New York, but it’s tough to see the Pack taking this one, even at home. I do think it’ll be closer than the spread. Chiefs 24, Packers 20

Last week

Straight up: 11-5

Against the spread: 11-5

Season
