Every Sunday morning, the NFL’s national reporters unload injury news and other tidbits to inform our gambling decisions. Here are some of the top news items and what they mean.
PLAYERS RULED OUT
Le’Veon Bell is the big surprise after being ruled out with an illness on Saturday. Bilal Powell and Ty Montgomery will fill in for him.
James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster are out again. James Washington should lead Pittsburgh’s receiving corps. He has a touchdown in three of his last four games. Benny Snell appears to have usurped Jaylen Samuels as Conner’s replacement.
Adoree’ Jackson’s absence could be big for Oakland’s passing game. He’s Tennessee’s best cover corner.
PLAYER RETURNING
Marlon Mack and Parris Campbell are sorely needed in Indianapolis. Matt Breida faked everyone out last week but actually appears to be ready this week. With 50 yards, Julio Jones will have his sixth consecutive 1,000-yard season.
JAMAL ADAMS (NYJ) WON’T PLAY
Already without their biggest star on offense (Le’Veon Bell) the Jets won’t have their biggest defensive star either. Avoiding a second loss to the Dolphins just got much more difficult.
ADAM THIELEN (MIN) TO SIT AGAIN
Entering 2019, Thielen hadn’t missed a game in his five-year career. His lingering hamstring injury has kept him out since Week 10. The last time he started and finished a game was Week 6.
VON MILLER (DEN) SHOULD BE BACK
If all goes according to plan, it will only be a one-week absence for Miller. He’ll face Deshaun Watson and the Texans in Houston.
RAVENS WILL HAVE MARQUISE BROWN AND MARLON HUMPHREY
No surprises here since they were full participants in practice at the end of the week. The Ravens play in Buffalo on what will be a warm day for this time of year.
WILL FULLER (HOU) NOT EXPECTED TO PLAY
At least the Texans know his status ahead of time so they don’t have to worry about him limping off the field after one or two catches.
JOSH JACOBS (OAK) A GAME-TIME DECISION
The injury is apparently quite painful, so even if Jacobs suits up there’s a legitimate possibility that he doesn’t finish the game.
ODELL BECKHAM JR. (CLE) PLAYING THROUGH A SPORTS HERNIA
That could partially explain why Jarvis Landry has been Cleveland’s top receiver. The excuse could provide optimism in 2020 if his surgery is a success. Perhaps the Browns will shut him down once they’re mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
TEXANS EXPECTED TO HAVE CORNERS BRADLEY ROBY AND GAREON CONLEY
The Chargers got Derwin James and Adrian Phillips back for Drew Lock’s first career start and the Broncos still managed to win. They’ll hope for similar success in Lock’s first start outside of Denver.
