Will Any First-Round Pick Jump In The Bellagio Fountains At The 2020 NFL Draft?

The 2020 NFL Draft will be held in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino on the iconic grounds. Yes, that’s right: the stage will actually be on the lake in front of the hotel. With the players expected to be shuttled to the stage with a boat, it’s opened up the question as to whether or not any first-round picks will end up in the lake. Let’s take a closer look and see if that’s a possibility:

THE BELLAGIO AND THE DRAFT

The NFL Draft coming to the Bellagio means that this significant sports event is coming to the Las Vegas Strip. The 2020 NFL Draft will not actually start until around 4:30 p.m. in Las Vegas on April 23, when the first pick, likely Joe Burrow to the Cincinnati Bengals, is made. However, there will be some pre-draft festivities at 2:30 p.m. in Las Vegas with the red carpet show at the Bellagio fountains. The draftees will make their way onto a stage to be introduced to the crowd in Las Vegas and that stage will be constructed on the lake where the fountains exist. That lake is where the various draft prospects will be transported on boats with the main stage will be next to the new Caesars Forum conference center, where fans will view first-round selections on that Thursday night in Vegas.

WILL ANYONE JUMP IN?

One of the realities of the NFL Draft is that the players wear fine and expensive suits, much as they do in the NBA Draft as well. This is a night to be seen and it is a night when first-round draft picks are experiencing a life-changing event they will want to celebrate with friends and family. Jumping into a lake might be a feel-good impulsive moment, but it would certainly be problematic for answering questions from the media, attending various public functions the night of the draft, and having a constant flow of communication with various important people, both personally and professionally. The other thing which has to be mentioned here is that jumping into the lake has been discouraged by the Bellagio itself. Legal liability could become a thorny subject, so players might be (appropriately) hesitant to do anything overly outlandish. All of these things have to be kept in mind.

NFL DRAFT ODDS

NO ONE JUMPS IN THE WATER: -500
SOMEONE JUMPS IN: +300

It is ultimately very unlikely that a player will jump in the water after being taken in the first round. One thing people have to remember here is that players will be coming off a multi-month period in which they attended the NFL Scouting Combine or did their own pro days to work out for scouts in more intimate settings. Then teams decided to draft them. Would a player do something which might make his NFL team doubt his intelligence or judgment? Would a player do something which might make a general manager or an owner slightly skeptical of his decision making? Remember that contracts do have certain parameters and requirements, but aren’t absolutely set in stone. The player, team, and agent will still sit down and hammer out a deal.

The only possible scenario if there is a group jump into the water – maybe at the end of the draft – but even that seems unlikely. Player agents will make sure their clients don’t do this.
