2022 NHL Second Round Betting Preview

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs lived up to the hype. Five of the eight series went to seven games, and the only blowout was Colorado dismantling Nashville. The Avalanche are big favorites to lift the most famous trophy in North America, and they are easily the biggest favorite in the second round of the playoffs too.

2022 NHL Second Round Betting Odds at BetOnline

Tampa Bay Lightning +140
Florida Panthers -160

This has the potential to be the most exciting series in the second round. Florida won the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the best record in the regular season, while Tampa Bay has won the last two Stanley Cup titles. The Panthers finally exorcised their postseason demons with their first playoff series win since 1996, and they would love to knock off their in-state rival that has had a lot more success over the last three decades.

Florida is an extremely well-rounded team. Jonathan Huberdeau is one of the best set-up men in the NHL, and the Panthers boast four 30-goal scorers in Huberdeau, Aleksander Barkov, Sam Reinhart, and Anthony Duclair. Aaron Ekblad has started to shine once again, Claude Giroux is the type of gritty player you need in the playoffs, and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been strong in net.

It’s looking like this could be the end of the line for Tampa Bay. The Lightning appear to be running on fumes after two very long postseason runs, and Brayden Point is now injured and will likely miss at least the first couple games of this series. Andrei Vasilevskiy is one of the best goaltenders in the game and Victor Hedman has been great, but it’s going to be tough to hold a young, fresh Florida squad at bay.

St. Louis Blues +320
Colorado Avalanche -400

The Avalanche had little trouble in their first-round series against Nashville, outscoring the Predators 21-9 in a four-game sweep. This is easily the most talented team in the NHL, and they have the talent to come at opponents in waves. Cale Makar had 10 points against Nashville, and Nathan MacKinnon notched five goals in that series. Gabriel Landeskog, Nazem Kadri, and Mikko Rantanen are all elite scorers too. Darcy Kuemper was exceptional in the three games he played too, and he looks to be fully recovered from an eye injury that kept him out of Game 4.

St. Louis still has several players on the roster that lifted the Stanley Cup for the Blues three years ago. Jordan Binnington was a brick wall in all three of his postseason starts, and Vladimir Tarasenko scored five goals against Minnesota in the first round. Ryan O’Reilly and David Perron combined for 17 points in six games, but there isn’t a lot of offensive firepower aside from those three players. Binnington will need to be at his best for the Blues to pull off the upset.

New York Rangers +165
Carolina Hurricanes -190

Home ice meant everything in Carolina’s first-round series against Boston. The home team won all seven games, and the Hurricanes are well aware of the advantage they have against the New York Rangers. Sebastian Aho is looking to get going after struggling a little bit against the Bruins and their great defensive forwards, while Antti Raanta looks healthy after a strong performance in Game 7.

The Rangers celebrated like they won the Stanley Cup after erasing a 3-1 deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. They might not have much gas left in the tank against a veteran Carolina team, and they will be at a talent disadvantage, so that makes Carolina one of the best bets to advance to the conference finals. Defenseman Adam Fox has to be gassed after averaging over 28 minutes per game against Pittsburgh, and Vezina Trophy favorite Igor Shesterkin did not fare well against the Penguins.

Edmonton Oilers +170
Calgary Flames -195

The Battle of Alberta between Edmonton and Calgary should be the fiercest playoff series. The Oilers are looking to erase three decades worth of postseason heartbreak with the best player in the game, and they will certainly light the lamp. Connor McDavid had 14 points (10 at even strength) in the first round, and Evander Kane and Leon Draisaitl each had nine points. Mike Smith was rock solid in net too, but he just needs to be above average to give the Oilers a chance with this offense.

The Flames only scored 15 goals in their first-round series against Dallas. Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk combined to light the lamp just three times, so Jacob Markstrom had to stand on his head for long stretches. Calgary can’t afford more offensive lapses against Edmonton if the Flames want to make it to the Western Conference Finals.
