Colombia to face Messi, Di María, and Argentina in Copa America Final
To no one’s surprise, Argentina has made the Copa America final. But their opponent is a bit of
a shocker as Colombia upset Uruguay to set up this clash Sunday night at Miami Gardens,
Florida. Argentina is seeking a record 16th Copa America title and is looking to join Spain as
the only countries to win three straight major titles, while Colombia tries to capture its first title
since 2001.
Argentina
Argentina has shown why they have won two major championships in the last few years and
now, looking for No. 3. They have shown their superior class from the outset of the tournament
and have allowed just a single goal, and that came in stoppage time vs Ecuador before winning
in penalties. Lautaro Martínez leads Copa with four goals and we finally saw Lionel Messi
score his first against Canada in the semifinal. It will also be Angel Di Maria’s last time wearing the albiceleste. Could they deliver in a bigger way on Sunday?
You get the sense we are still in store for something special from Messi. The fact the World Cup
holders have been incredible without their captain at his best, makes you wonder if they can
cruise to another title. Argentina will look to end Colombia’s long unbeaten streak and for those
wondering, the last team to beat Colombia? Argentina.
Colombia
While Argentina may be the defending champions, Colombias has been the hottest nation on
the planet over the last two years, an unbeaten streak of a team record 28 games.
James Rodríguez will be Colombia’s key player as he will look to create some opportunities and
provide the service needed. He set up the game winner against Uruguay giving him six assists
in the tournament, triple the amount of any other player. Another important player will not be
playing on Sunday as Daniel Muñoz was given a red card vs Uruguay after receiving his second
yellow card. Munoz has two goals at the tournament so now Colombia will rely on others
including Jhon Córdoba to provide the offense.
Colombia goalkeeper Federico Valverde has surrendered just two goals but none in the
knockout stage. If Colombia continues this form they will give Argentina a real test and could
pull off the victory.
Head to Head History
Argentina has won the last two meetings, and five of the last eight. Colombia’s last win came at
the 2019 Copa America, in the group stage.
