How Will Bronny James, Zhaire Wade Perform In High School Basketball?

It’s no surprise that Sierra Canyon High School debuts as the No. 1 team in the nation heading into a new season. After all, the two-time defending CIF State Open Division champions enter the year with some impressive returning players as well as some incoming star power. Bronny James and Zaire Wade, the sons of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade respectively, will make their high school debuts. The scary part is that for as impressive as that tandem looks, they aren’t even the best players on their teams’ roster. The sportsbooks have jumped all over this story with a unique set of prop bets to target their debuts. Here is a look at the Zhaire Wade and Bronny James props on the board relating to the sons of LeBron and Wade as they make their high school debuts.

Sierra Canyon already has three returning all-area players led by TCU commit Terren Frank, sophomore Amari Bailey and seven-foot center Harold Yu. The Trailblazers also added Kentucky commit B.J. Boston, top national recruit Ziaire Williams and the 6’7’’ Shy Odom. For as impressive as James has looked on the highlight reels, he will have his work cut out for him averaging a double-digit point total throughout the course of the season. Only four players on last year’s roster averaged upwards of 10.5 points per game. For as talented as James is, he’s still one of the youngest players on the roster with some impressive talent already set to play big minutes. James is certainly capable of averaging 11.0 points per game if the opportunity is there. However, with so much talent on one roster it’s more likely that James averages under 10.5 points per game this season.

It’s definitely more likely that James scores 12 points or more in a game than it is that he averages 11.0 points or more throughout the course of an entire season. However, that doesn’t mean it will happen in his debut. As mentioned, there is already a ton of talent on this Sierra Canyon roster. Factor in the nerves that likely come with a high school debut on national television, and the smart money is on Bronny scoring fewer than 12 points in his Trailblazers debut.

Last year’s team went 7-0 in league play en route to a 27-4 record and a national championship. While they lost some key players from that title-winning squad, there is some debate that this year’s team is actually better after the additions they made. Sierra Canyon might not go perfect from start to finish, but they should at the very least be able to match the 27 wins they recorded last season.

As mentioned in the previous section, this year’s Trailblazers team has the potential to be even better than last year’s team. Sierra Canyon certainly has the talent to repeat as state champions. The only issue is that you aren’t getting very good odds betting on them to actually do it. While the smart money is still on the YES answer here, it might make more sense to stick to betting on their season win total rather than betting them to win another state title.

Wade is among the players projected to produce at a higher level than James this season. However, the average point per game number that the sportsbooks have listed for him still seems a little high. After all, only three players from last year’s championship team averaged upwards of 14.5 points per game. Williams, Frank and Boston are all back, and the Trailblazers added plenty of talent. Wade would have the potential to top this average points per game as the start of a lesser team. However, under the circumstances it’s still more likely he doesn’t hit that mark with Sierra Canyon this season.

Wade could very well hit the 14-point mark in his debut against Montgomery High. However, as is the case with James it’s still difficult to forecast what we can expect in his Trailblazers debut. Rather than going all-in on these game one odds, it makes much more sense to watch the opener and get a better idea of what we can expect of both players. If we had to choose, we would take the under on this prop. At the same time, it makes a lot more sense to just avoid it entirely if possible.
