Joey Chestnut Opens As Heavy Favorite To Win 2020 Hot Dog Eating Contest

We’re still in the winter months around the country but as we move into March and the weather starts to thaw out a little bit, the warm days of summer will be in plan view ahead. That means that the one of the most iconic sporting events of the year – if you want to call it that – will be upon us not too long in the future: Nathan’s annual hot dog eating contest. BetOnline has posted hot dog eating contest odds and to no one’s surprise, Joey Chestnut is the favorite.
HOT DOG CONTEST ODDS: WILL JOEY CHESTNUT WIN THE 2020 NATHAN’S CONTEST?
YES -900
NO: +500
Although the hot dog eating contest has gained plenty of popularity in recent years – mostly because it’s now broadcast on television and you can bet on it – but it’s actually not something new. It’s been around since 1967. Of late, it’s been completely dominated by one man, though, and he’s the heavy favorite to take home the title in 2019.
Joey Chestnut has won all but once in this competition since 2007. The lone loss came in 2015 when Matt Stonie ate 62 while Chestnut managed to scarf down just 60. Even so, he’s crushed it in the last couple of years as his numbers actually continue to rise. His dynasty appears to be far from over as he used to win with as few as 54 (in 2010) and was in the 60’s in the mid 2010’s but he’s hit 70 or more in each of the last four years. In 2017, he set the world record with 72 and then topped that a year later by eating 74.
As you can see, the oddsmakers don’t expect him to slow down at this point. He’s a humongous -900 favorite and it would be a massive shock if he didn’t win. It’s important to have some perspective here: in 2019, the second-place finisher ate just 50 and there were two others in the 40’s. Chestnut is not only winning these events, he’s crushing the field. It would even be a mild surprise if he didn’t surpass 70 again.
HOT DOG CONTEST ODDS: WILL MIKI SUDO WIN THE 2020 NATHAN’S CONTEST?
YES -550
NO: +325
Since 2011, the women have been added to the competition, which has made for some added excitement. Miki Sudo is the defending Ladies’ Champion as she ate 31 last year, edging Michelle Lesco, who was at 26. Sudo has dominated the women’s side as she’s won every single year since 2014. While she won with 31 last year, that was one of her lowest outputs produced in a win. Her previous three results were 37, 38.5 and 38.
The oddsmakers have made her a prohibitive favorite as right now, there isn’t anyone in the field that looks like they can stop her. We’ll see if anyone can pull a stunning surprise and top either Sudo or Chestnut come July 4th when the 2020 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest takes place.
