Paris Masters – ATP Tennis Preview

The 2019 edition of the Paris (Bercy) Masters is about to start, which is the last full tournament of the ATP season. While the other the other eight are all outdoor events, this the one Masters 1000 event on the ATP Tour which is indoors. Karen Khachanov is the defending champ but he’s coming off a shorter-than-expected run at the 2019 Erste Bank Open when he was bounced in the quarterfinals.

The big boys are coming out to play here as Novak Djokovic is in the fold as well as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Meanwhile the red-hot Daniil Medvedev is back in the mix after pulling out in Vienna Who is the best bet here?

2014 – NOVAK DJOKOVIC

BEST BET TO WIN IT

This tournament has been very volatile and extremely hard to predict the past few years. Two years ago, Jack Sock won and he beat little-known Filip Krajinovic in the final, an out-of-nowhere result which had no relationship to anything else which happened in the 12 months before or after that tournament. Last year, Karen Khachanov stunned Novak Djokovic in the final, coming from obscurity to win his first Masters 1000 title. Khachanov has not been terrible in 2019, but he hasn’t been especially strong, either, so who is going to win this thing?

The draw was released on Friday, and Daniil Medvedev was drawn with Novak Djokovic in the same half of the draw. The smart money doesn’t necessarily lie with one player at this tournament. The best bet is that the winner of a close semifinal between the two men will likely win the tournament.

Roger Federer isn’t playing his best, and other high seeds such as Dominic Thiem aren’t comfortable on a fast indoor hardcourt. Take Djokovic over Medvedev, but either guy is a decent pick to win.

BEST LONGSHOT WORTH A FLIER

Matteo Berrettini needs to do well here to get the eighth and final spot at the ATP Finals in London. He is playing great tennis right now as he’s won 13 of his last 17 matches and is still play in Vienna. He has reached the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Austria and before that, he made the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters and the U.S. Open. While is not a top-five player, he is playing like one right now. He is an intriguing underdog pick to go deep in Paris.

PLAYER TO AVOID

We told you not to pick Rafael Nadal in Shanghai, and shortly after that note, Nadal pulled out of the tournament. He probably was not injured, though he cited his wrist. He was about to get married to his longtime girlfriend and he simply wasn’t in a good position to play well. Now, after a monthlong layoff with a wedding and other personal events occurring in his life, Rafa returns to the court. He will likely be rusty, and with the red-hot Berrettini in his section of the draw, Nadal did not get a favorable path. This is also why Djokovic and Medvedev are the best choices in Paris.
