Prop Bet Preview For Round Four of The Open Championship at Royal Portrush

Rory McIlroy may have flamed out at Royal Portrush (and then almost made the cut anyway) but Irish golf fans are hoping that Shane Lowry can seal the deal after he charged into the lead on Saturday. Lowry shot a blistering 63 leaving him four shots up on Tommy Fleetwood at -12 heading into the fourth and final round. Tommy Fleetwood is three back after a -5 under round on Saturday with JB Holmes is in third place. There’s some other big names further back in the pack that could make a move but if Lowry keeps his cool they won’t get a chance. Should he falter, however, it all of a sudden becomes a wide open competition.
In this preview we’ll look at some of the golf prop betting odds and other interesting wagers heading into the fourth round of The Open Championship:
2019 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP AT ROYAL PORTRUSH ROUND FOUR PROP BET PREVIEW
WILL AN AMERICAN WIN THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP?
With Lowry holding on to a huge lead the ‘No’ is an overwhelming favorite at -900. Keep in mind, however, that Lowry isn’t used to being in this position. Lowry had a four stroke lead going into the final round of the 2016 US Open only to shoot a 76 as Dustin Johnson came from behind to take the victory. Greg Norman is famously the only golfer in history to blow multiple leads of four or more strokes after 54 holes of a major. Lowry definitely doesn’t want to be the second but that adds even more pressure. If he does blow the lead, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood is the closest contender but behind him there are plenty of very talented American golfers including JB Holmes, Brooks Koepka and Ricky Fowler. If Lowry slips it’s a wide open tournament and there are countless ways for this bet to cash.

WILL THERE BE A PLAYOFF?
We talked about this wager before the tournament began and the dynamics remain the same. This is one of those high risk/low reward yet statistically advantageous bets like the ‘Will there be a safety?’ prop bet in the Super Bowl. They’re tough to pull the trigger on but the statistical value is in your favor and that’s how you make money betting on sports. Since 2009, there has only been one playoff–Zack Johnson won in a playoff at St. Andrews in 2015. That’s three years without a playoff an only one in the last 9 years. The fundamentals of this bet haven’t changed.

TOP AMERICAN FINISHER IN THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP?
Brooks Koepka is the big name, JB Holmes is tied with Koepka but the value play looks like Rickie Fowler. Fowler’s play has improved throughout the tournament and he jumped 12 spots after a very strong -5 under on Saturday. That was the best round of any American golfer and that puts him right in the mix to finish as the highest ranking US golfer.

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TOP FIVE FINISH
We’ll look for value here. We talked about Ricky Fowler above and he’s got a good shot to finish with a top 5 even if Lowry hangs on to win. Danny Willett moved up more than anyone on Saturday–he shot a 74 in the first round, a 67 in the second and a 65 in the third. He had the best third round of anyone other than Lowry and jumped 24 spots in the process. Also, John Rahm is right on the periphery and he’s got the skills at a plus money price.

BET THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TOP FIVE FINISH: DANNY WILLETT +550
