Renegades, Defenders, Vipers Open As XFL Championship Favorites

While the NFL season is just coming to an end following the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory, a new football season is just about to begin with the XFL returning this weekend. Vince McMahon will give his failed football league another chance with eight franchises set to compete for a championship in the league’s first season back. While none of these teams has even played a game yet, the oddsmakers have posted XFL futures on who’ll win the 2020 championship.
DALLAS RENEGADES
XFL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS: +350
While the Cowboys are coming off another disappointing season, football fans in Dallas now have a legitimate shot at celebrating a championship this season thanks to the arrival of the Renegades. Former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has assembled a quality staff and some intriguing talent led by his former Oklahoma quarterback, Landry Jones. The experience and talent that Stoops and Jones alone bring to the table is intriguing. Factor in the presence of defensive coordinator Chris Woods and this team will start the season as one of the three teams favored to win it all.
D.C. DEFENDERS
XFL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS: +350
Although they might not have had the most success at the NFL level, there is no denying the potential that players like Cardale Jones and Eli Rogers will bring to Washington this XFL season. D.C. is loaded with potential that never panned out at the NFL level but could thrive with another opportunity in the XFL. The difference between the Defenders and some of the other top teams in the league on paper is their defensive secondary, with names like Matt Elam, Shamarko Thomas and Rahim Moore set to line up in their secondary. With head coach Pep Hamilton working closely with Jones and a defense that could be among the best in the XFL, D.C. is a good bet to consider taking to contend for a title this season.
TAMPA BAY VIPERS
XFL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS: +350
If you are looking to take a shot on a better value pick to contend for a title in the XFL’s first season back, then the Vipers make a lot of sense at +350 odds to win outright. Tampa Bay will be led by a former NFL head coach in Marc Trestman, who did an excellent job leading the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts to Grey Cup titles in his previous stints in the CFL. Quarterback Aaron Murray is a capable passer and the Vipers have surrounded him with explosive weapons including former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Antonio Callaway. Their odds have shot up the board the most as they’re actually the team that has the highest regular season win total at 7.5.
NEW YORK GUARDIANS
XFL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS: +750
The Guardians are another team to watch for thanks in large part to the intrigue that two-time Super Bowl champion head coach Kevin Gilbride and a talented quarterback tandem bring to the table. Gilbride is known for his creative offensive mind. In New York, he will have a talented pair of quarterbacks to work with in former AAF star Luis Perez and former NFL veteran Matt McGloin. While they will have to lean heavily on their offense in order to compete with the Renegades and Defenders, there is no doubt New York will be in the mix as a championship contender.
