Soccer Betting: Liverpool at Chelsea

It’s been a very eventful year at Chelsea. The Blues finished third on last season’s Premiership table though were well off the blistering pace set by Manchester City and Liverpool. Even though Chelsea was ‘top 3’ they were 26 points back of league champs Manchester City. The disappointment of not being as competitive as they would have wished was mitigated somewhat by a Europa League title. Then came the managerial upheaval with Maurizio Sarri returning to Italy to oversee matters at Juventus. He was replaced by legit Chelsea legend Frank Lampard who received raves for the job he did at Derby County.

Now the drama is all behind them and the 2019-2020 season is underway. The general opinion is that Lampard is doing a decent job so far, particularly in a season where Chelsea wasn’t expected to do much due to their transfer ban. Chelsea is currently in 9th place though in a pack of 7 teams with 8 points. Chelsea has scored 11 and conceded 11 in Premier League play and it’s evident that the team needs to improve on the defensive end.

Unfortunately, their opponent on Sunday will make that exceedingly difficult. Liverpool has been an absolute wrecking crew to this point in the Premiership season. They might not be ‘perfect’ but their stat line suggests they’ve been close to it with a 5-0-0 record scoring 15 goals and conceding only 4. Not surprisingly, they’ve been equally nasty on the road with a 2-0-0 mark scoring 5 and conceding only 1. Making matters worse for Chelsea is that the scheduling situation makes this a game that Liverpool will be fully focused on. Their only fixtures for the next week are a League Cup game against League Two Milton Keynes followed by a Saturday game at Sheffield United. Their next ‘circled’ game will come on 10/2/19 when they host Salzburg in Champions League play.

Chelsea has been uncharacteristically weak at Stamford Bridge of late They’ve yet to win at home under Lampard with a 0-2-0 record and they’ve gone winless in their last 4 games at home. They’ve won just 1 of their last 6 at home and unless some turnaround is in order that will soon become a sore point with the Chelsea faithful. They’ll show up to compete here but it’s tough to see them stopping the Liverpool freight train.
