Soccer Saturday In Germany As Karlsruher SC Hosts Dynamo Dresden

We’re two weeks away from the start of the German Bundesliga season but the lower levels of soccer in the country have already started their campaign. This will be the second week of action for the second level of the sport in Germany, 2.Bundesliga and we’ll take a look at an interesting game between Dynamo Dresden and newly promoted Karlsruher SC who will host the fixture at their home Wildparkstadion.

Since the start of the 21st Century, Karlsruher SC has spent most of their time in 2.Bundesliga. They did play at the top level in 2008 and 2009 but with the exception of three seasons at the third level 3.Liga (including the last two) they’ve been a fixture in this circuit. For most of the time, they had been a very capable competitor in 2.Bundesliga before 2017 when an 18th place finish sent them back down. In two years below they finished third in 2018 and second in 2019 which has them back up where they hope to stay for awhile. As a club, they’re likely of a higher quality than most newly promoted sides in European football. Last season in 3.Liga they played extremely well with a record of 20-11-7.

Dynamo Dresden is a fairly recent addition to the German soccer team being founded in 1953 (Karlsruher, by contrast, dates back to 1894). Initially, the team was affiliated with the East German police and for much of it’s history was one of the more popular and successful teams in East German soccer with eight league title wins. Their fortunes haven’t been quite as good since the reunification of the country–they played in the top level Bundesliga for four seasons but since 1995 have been bouncing up and down between the second and fourth level of the sport. Since 2008, they’ve split time between 3. Liga and 2. Bundesliga. This is the third straight year they’ve been back up at the second level. They were a decidedly mediocre team last year, good enough that relegation was never really a concern but not good enough to do much else finishing with a record of 11-9-14. On the road, the team went 4-4-9.

Karlsruher opened the year with a nice 2-1 road win against another newly promoted side, Wehen Wiesbaden. It should be noted that Karlsruher was a very good road side last year in 3.Liga, going unbeaten in 17 of 19 away (10 wins, 7 draws). Dynamo Dresden looked awful in their season opener, losing to newly relegated Nurnberg on their home floor. Their team is in a state of flux in terms of personnel so it might take them awhile to get their house in order. Realistically speaking, if they can finish anywhere near the middle of the 2. Bundesliga pack it could be a considered a successful season. Dresden went 4-49 away last year scoring just 15 goals (tied for second lowest road output in the league) and conceding 29. They’ve won only once in their last 9 away games being held to 1 goal or fewer in 7 of them. During that stretch, they scored 7 while conceding 19.

Dresden might be worth a look in certain spots at home but until they show some reversal in their road form no interest in betting them away. Instead, they’ll likely be a ‘go against’ when playing away from home. Karlsruher might be a bit ‘under the radar’ early on as they look to be a peg better than most newly promoted sides. We’ll keep our eye on the Germany soccer odds looking for opportunities to take advantage of this mistaken public perception. For now, we’ll go with the home team in a low scoring game.
