Thomas, McIlroy Favored To Win The Zozo Championship This Week

We’ll see a star-studded field this week in Japan as Tiger Woods will join Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama and Rory McIlroy at the inaugural edition of The Zozo Championship this week. Like last week’s C.J. Cup in South Korea, this tournament will also feature a field of just 78 players.

As the PGA Tour returns to Japan for the first time in six years, let’s examine the field and see what are the best bets on the board:

THE ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP
OCTOBER 24TH-27TH, 2019
ACCORDIA GOLF NARASHINO COUNTRY CLUB, CHIBA, JAPAN

THE FAVORITE

JUSTIN THOMAS +750

Thomas delivered on his status as the favorite at last week’s to win the CJ Cup in South Korea. Now, the 26-year-old will make the short trip to Japan looking to double down as the favorite to win The Zozo Championship this week. With two wins in his last four starts, there isn’t another golfer on the planet that is as hot as Thomas right now. He’s finished no worse than T-12th in his last eight events. Needless to say, that’s why he’s at the top of the board here and just one of two golfers priced inside of 18/1.

NEXT IN LINE

RORY MCILROY +800

McIlroy is another interesting option among the favorites. He’s the other golfer priced insdie of 18/1.

After winning a few skins in the Japan Skills Challenge, the reigning PGA Tour Player of the year will look to stay hot in the country. He slumped a bit in his last start at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, so that’s a bit of a concern, but McIlroy is one of the most talented players in the field. Anytime he’s in the field, he’s going to be priced in this range.

HIDEKI MATSUYAMA +1800

Matsuyama is an intriguing pick because he is available at much better odds than both Thomas and McIlroy to win this tournament. He’s also one of the few golfers in this field with legitimate experience at this course, Matsuyama might even have a slight edge over his competition among the top favorites to win as he’s coming off a third-place finish at NINE BRIDGES. Matsuyama has already logged three Top 10 results since the playoffs, so he’s got a real shot here and the payout is tasty – if he comes through.

SLEEPER PICKS

TOMMY FLEETWOOD +2500

Fleetwood doesn’t stand out as a name that has been talked about that much heading into this week’s event. However, he is ranked T-6th in greens hit at NINE Bridges, where he registered a Top 20 finish in his PGA Tour season debut. With seven Top 20 results in his last nine starts worldwide, Fleetwood is worth taking a flier on for the Top 10 props.

LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN +3300

Looking a little further down the list of contenders, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Oosthuizen is available at +3300 odds. He finished the 2019-10 season with four straight Top 20 results before finishing T-21st in the FedEx Cup. Now he gets the opportunity to pick up where he left off in his first action in two months. I’m not expecting a win here but like Fleetwood, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finished in the Top 10.
