College football returned on Saturday night as we had an FCS matchup between Austin Peay and Central Arkansas that was quite entertaining. The FBS returns on Thursday when South Alabama and Southern Miss will kick off the 2020 college football season.
We’ve actually got a number of games on the board this week beyond the aforementioned Thursday showdown. We’ll also see SMU take on Texas State as part of a trio of games on Saturday followed by BYU and Navy on Monday, September 7th.

9:44 PM PACIFIC: PADRES ACQUIRE MIKE CLEVINGER
The San Diego Padres have made a flurry of trades before the 2020 Major League Baseball trade deadline and the latest was acquiring Cleveland Indians ace Mike Clevinger. What’s bizarre is the Indians traded away a quality pitcher when they’re in first place.
Clevinger has the second-best ERA in the American League since the start of 2017 (only behind Justin Verlander), so the Padres are getting an ace-caliber starter. We’ll see if this propels them to push the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

5:41 PM PACIFIC: 2020 US OPEN TENNIS BEGINS TODAY
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a tennis grand slam but the players are on the courts at Flushing Meadows, getting the 2020 US Open underway. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic is favored to win it all while on the women’s side, Naomi Osaka is the chalk.
The path to the title should be a bit easier for Djokovic as both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are not participating in this tournament. Djokovic won the Western & Southern Open right before this event, so he appears to be in good form.

3:01 PM PACIFIC: BUCKS-HEAT SERIES STARTS TONIGHT
The Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat will get going in their Round 2 series tonight at 6:30 PM ET. The Bucks are currently a 4.5-point favorite for the contest, are -245 on the monyeline and the total is 224.
We’ve also got a series price up on the board as the Bucks are -420 to advance while the Heat are at +340. The Heat swept the Indiana Pacers in the opening round while the Bucks took care of the Orlando Magic in five games.

The NASCAR season continues tonight with the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. This is a tricky track as few of the regular drivers who are always among the favorites do well here, so who knows who will thrive?
Taking a look at the starting grid, we’ve got Kevin Harvick in the pole position, so the No. 4 Ford car will be in the first spot. Right behind him will be Martin Truex Jr., who will start second, and he’ll be followed by Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski.

The Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder are set to engage in a pivotal Game 5 on Saturday night. The Rockets are expected to get a big boost to their lineup with the return of point guard Russell Westbrook, who has missed the first four games.

On Saturday, we’ll see action a 3:30 PM ET when the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Orlando Magic in Game 5. After that, we’ll see the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets Game 5 followed by Los Angeles Lakers-Portland Trail Blazers Game 5.

5:45 PM PACIFIC: WILL BIG 10 PLAY GAMES DURING SPRING 2021?
The Big 10 originally canceled their fall football season but there are now some rumors that they might try to start their season around Thanksgiving. Originally, they had shifted its focus to the spring of 2021. While a lot of college football bettors might not be thrilled, this might actually be what’s safest and best for everyone involved.
The biggest question remaining is whether or not they’ll actually play as there is no clear-cut vision that the pandemic will be completely gone by then. The Brooklyn Nets fired head coach Kenny Atkinson earlier in the season and Jacque Vaughn has been running the show in the interim. However, the team is exploring all options as they find a long-term solution to lead Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and company next season.

The Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders have engaged in a fairly entertaining Eastern Conference semifinal so far. The Isles won Game 1 rather easily, taking it 5-0. The Flyers rebounded with a 4-3 win in Game 2.
Game 2 was tight as the Flyers built a 3-0 lead only to blow it all in the third. They eventually won. It was the 10th straight time that they’ve won after a loss, so they’re a good rebound team, but can they get the win in Game 3?

There was growing sentiment on Tuesday night that some NBA players didn’t want to play and on Wednesday, that sentiment spread across the league. There was supposed to be three games in the bubble tonight but all three have now been postponed.
While the league and players engage in all sorts of meetings tonight, they have decided that they’re not going to be playing games for now. It’s unclear if it’s just a day or two off, or if the entire season is in jeopardy. Stay tuned as we hope to get answers soon.

4:49 PM PACIFIC: BRUINS-LIGHTNING GAME 3 TONIGHT
We’ve got a quick turnaround in the Boston Bruins-Tampa Bay Lightning series. While there’s normally one day off in between games, the Bruins and Lightning engage in Game 3 tonight after playing in Game 2 last night.
On Tuesday night, the Lightning edged the Bruins 4-3 in overtime. That tied the series at one game apiece. The big question for Wednesday night is whether the Bruins will go with goaltender Jaroslav Halak as the 35-year-old hasn’t played to back-to-back sets this season.

The pivotal Game 5 of the Houston Rockets-Oklahoma City Thunder game goes tonight. The Rockets have announced that point guard Russell Westbrook will test out his quad and see if he’s able to play tonight.
The Rockets won the first two games in the series and appeared to be in good shape to win Game 3. However, the Thunder bounced back with an overtime win in Game 3 and then took Game 4. Houston is currently a four-point favorite for Game 5.

The NBA bubble is going well for some teams and poorly for others. As a result, we’re likely to see a number of teams that are underperforming fire their head coaches after the season. The only question is how many bubble teams will hand out pink slips?
The latest wave of coaches on the hot seat has to be headlines by Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown. The 76ers have plenty of talent but have failed to deliver in the playoffs. Mike D’Antoni of the Houston Rockets is in the same boat as the team may go in a different direction unless the team has a long playoff run.

A number of countries around the world have banned TikTok as there are fears that they are sharing personal data with the Chinese government. In the United States, President Donald Trump said he would ban them unless they sell.
It looks like Microsoft is most likely to buy them but the question is for how much? The over-under is set at $60 billion with the line showing -120 both ways. You can also bet on whether they’ll sell before or after September 5th, 2020.

There’s a big UFC Fight Night happening on Saturday at the UFC APEX Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it’s going to feature a pair of big-time heavyweights. Derrick Lewis will try to continue his ascent up the ladder when he takes on Aleksei Oleinik.
One of the other intriguing bouts on the card will be Chris Weidman taking on Omaria Akhmedov. Weidman was once the UFC Middleweight Champion after starting his MMA career 13-0. Since then, though he has lost five of six with all five losses coming via knockout. We’ll see if he can rebound here.

We’ve seen a couple of wildly entertaining contests between the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks so far and we’ll see Game 3 of their series tonight at 10:30 PM ET. There have been at least nine goals scored in each of the first two games.
The Blackhawks won Game 1 6-4 when Dominik Kubalik racked up a whopping five points. The Oilers rebounded in Game 2, picking up a 6-3 win as Conor McDavid scored a hat trick. The total for Game 3 is set at 6.5 as the odds makers are expecting a high-scoring affair.

Another big domino has fallen in terms of a player opting out in the 2020 NFL season. New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley has decided to skip the season, which is a big blow to a Jets defense that already lost Jamal Adams (via trade).
The Jets regular season win total is currently 6.5 after the team finished 7-9 last season. The Jets played well down the stretch, winning six of their final eight games, but the 2020 calendar has just gotten a lot harder due to the loss of Mosley.
