WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE COURSE
The Royal Pines course will host the Australian PGA Championship for the seventh time. While the course is generally flat for the most part, water will come in to play at 13 different holes. Temperatures are usually fairly normal for this time of the season. However, the fact that the course is located so close to the coast means there is always the prospect for rain. Following a major redesign in 2014 and 2015, those that have teed off here in recent years should have an edge when it comes to what to expect at this venue.
5 TRENDS WORTH NOTING FOR THE SENTRY TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
- Golfers manage to hit fairways 71% of the time at this event compared to 60% at an average tour event
- This is the only course on the PGA Tour that plays to a par 73
- The last eight winners here all played here in a prior season at least once prior to their victory, so avoid the newbies
- Seven of the last eight defending champions have all finished 7th or better, so don’t be scared off of repeats. The only exception was Justin Thomas in 2018, who ended up placing 22nd.
- Ernie Els has the lowest score ever at this tournament, posting a -31 across four rounds
GARY WOODLAND +115 OVER PATRICK REED
Both of these golfers have good track records here. Reed has made six appearances at this event, including a win in 2015. Last year, he slipped up, though, falling to 25th. That was his worst result at the Tournament of Champions.
It’s not that I think Reed will have a bad weekend but keep an eye on Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion. I see some value with him in this head-to-head matchup. He was the leader at this event after 54 holes but couldn’t quite close it out as he was eventually beat out by Xander Schauffele by a stroke. Woodland comes into this event in excellent form as he had a third in Japan and a fifth in South Korea. He also led after three rounds at the Hero World Challenge and performed well at the Presidents Cup. As an underdog, there’s some value with him in this spot.
