2020 League of Legends World Championship Semifinals

The only thing we know for certain headed into the League of Legends World Championship Semifinals is that there will be an LPL representative at the Worlds Finals for the third straight year. Either Top Sports or Suning will advance to next week’s finals, and the winner will be looking to follow in the footsteps of past champions Invictus Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix.

We’ll see either DAMWON Gaming or G2 Esports try to end the LPL’s reign next weekend. G2 are trying to become the first Western team to win a true Worlds after coming up just short last year, while DAMWON Gaming are hoping to bring back LCK dominance.

2020 League of Legends World Championship Semifinals Betting Odds

DAMWON Gaming -250
G2 Esports +205

After the last three weeks, it’s easy to say that DAMWON Gaming are the best Korean team since 2017. Teams from the LCK just haven’t looked that sharp in international competitions over the last couple years, but DAMWON have hit their stride. They turned the corner midway through the LCK Summer Split, and that has made this team the favorite to win Worlds alongside Top Esports.

Their play has been especially impressive considering this isn’t the optimal meta for DAMWON. This team wants to play through laners Nuguri and ShowMaker, but they have adapted and are enabling Canyon to take over in the early game. According to Games of Legends, Canyon has the best KDA of any player at Worlds, posting a 10.6 KDA.

The next two highest KDAs at Worlds belong to bottom laner Ghost and ShowMaker, so DAMWON have been the best performing team. Ghost’s performance has been really important as he was considered the weak link throughout the domestic season.

It’s going to be tough for G2 to win Worlds. This team peaked at last year’s Mid-Season Invitational and they rode that wave to be runner-up last year. However, G2 haven’t looked as sharp in 2020 as they did in 2019.

The meta fits them worse than any of the other semifinalists. G2 have not looked sharp when playing through Jankos, and he has largely been hit or miss throughout this postseason. Jankos functions best on tank champions, but that is not incentivized at this Worlds.

Caps has been great in the mid lane. He is responsible for 26.6 percent of his team’s damage, and he can play a variety of roles. His Sylas, Ekko, and Twisted Fate have been fantastic in particular at Worlds, but ShowMaker is one of the few players that can outclass him on a skill level.

Top Esports -172
Suning +143

One of the pre-tournament favorites no longer looks like an unstoppable juggernaut. We saw Top Esports lose to FlyQuest in the Group Stage, and they had to reverse sweep Fnatic to make it out of the quarterfinals. TES were the biggest favorites to advance to the semifinals per the League of Legends betting odds, but they were the only team that needed five games to punch their ticket.

The only player that looked consistently great against Fnatic was Knight. Knight has been the best mid laner in the world this year, and he continually outplayed Nemesis. His overall stats aren’t great, but he has made an enormous impact in both the laning stage and team fights.

JackeyLove and Karsa were both a bit shaky early but rallied in later games, while rookie support Yuyanjia seemed to let the moment overcome him at times. Top laner 369’s Sion was clutch though, so Suning must have a response to that tank.

Suning was considered to be in the next tier of teams at the start of Worlds, but they have proved they belong with wins over G2 and JD Gaming. The meta fits this team exceptionally well, as they have a fantastic jungler that can take over in SofM and bottom laner Huanfeng is having a breakout tournament.

This team has a very good chance of pulling off the upset against TES as Huanfeng has the talent to outperform JackeyLove in the late game.
