The Triple Crown Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby
With the Kentucky Derby just weeks away, it’s time to get in on the action of the ‘most exciting two minutes in sports’
The Kentucky Derby is a prestigious, top rank, Grade 1 stakes race for 3-year thoroughbred horses and is the first race of the renowned Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Horses. With a distance of 1 ¼ miles long, the race takes place on a dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
With 20 horses competing, this race is a lot larger than the average of 8 horses per race. The 20 horses participating in the race must have first successfully travelled along the Road to the Kentucky Derby – a series of 35 races taking place all over the country and world. Points are earned to the top 4 horses in each race, and the 20 horses with the most points then progress to the starting gate in the Kentucky Derby.
Taking place on the first Saturday in May every year, the event has grown in popularity over the years, typically drawing a crowd of about 155 000 people. It is the longest continuously held sporting event in the United States, dating back to 1875.
During the Kentucky Derby, there are numerous horse betting opportunities available. Betting on horse races is a fun and easy way to win and there are several different wagers offered for each race.
There are several of these wagers available, with the three most basic being the win wager, the place wager and the show wager. The win wager, while the most difficult of the three to win, has the highest payoff. The show wager will yield the lowest payoff but offers better chances of winning.
An exacta win is a more advanced wagering option but offers a higher payout than win bets. You bet an exacta by selecting a minimum of two horses to finish first and second. These horses must finish in that order to win the wager. Additionally, a boxed wager is available, allowing bettors to bet on either horse finishing first or second, in any order, making your chances of winning more likely.
A Trifecta bet is the most difficult to win but offers the highest payout. You must select a minimum of three horses to finish first, second and third. Again bettors have the option of a boxed wager to increase the chances of winning.
