Best Bets to Win the 2020 Zozo Championship at Sherwood

For the second week in a row, a PGA Tour event that was supposed to be held in Asia will take place in the United States. This year’s Zozo Championship will take place at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California instead of Narashino County Club in Tokyo.

Jon Rahm is a slight favorite to win this tournament per the golf betting odds at 10-1. Other big names like Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa are gunning for Rahm though, and this should be one of the most competitive events of the young season.

Event: Zozo Championship at Sherwood

Category: PGA Tour

Date: October 22-25, 2020

Location: Sherwood Country Club, Thousand Oaks, California

Past Winners

2019: Tiger Woods -19

Tiger Woods beat Hideki Matsuyama to win this event last year. Woods shot 64 on Thursday and Friday to take a commanding lead entering the weekend, and he went on to beat Matsuyama by three strokes. The next best score was 13-under, as Woods recorded one of his most comfortable victories in recent years.

The Course

Sherwood Country Club is no stranger to top tier golf. Although this has never been a PGA Tour stop, there have been numerous events here over the years. The first primetime matchplay event happened here in 1999 as Tiger Woods took down David Duval in the Showdown at Sherwood. Woods hosted his World Challenge at this course from 2000 to 2013, and Sherwood was previously the site of Greg Norman’s Shark Shootout.

The layout of this course is very intriguing. Most par-72 courses on the PGA Tour have two to four par 5s, but there are five par 5s at Sherwood. Accordingly, there are also five par 3s, but the total distance of this course is much less than you would expect at just 7,073 yards. These greens could be as fast as 13 feet on the Stimpmeter, yet the sheer number of par 5s should call for plenty of birdie chances.

There will be no Friday cut at this event, and every golfer will have the opportunity to finish all 72 holes.

Value Play to Win the Event: Tiger Woods +2800

Woods is a great play at 28-1 to win the Zozo Championship. Although he won this tournament halfway across the world last year, he has more experience with Sherwood than any other golfer at this event. He played annually at this course from 1999 to 2013, and he knows how to take advantage of these par 5s. While he doesn’t have the same power that he did in the past, all of the par 5s are less than 570 yards in length, and three of those are no longer than 531 yards.

Top 5 Prop: Xander Schauffele +250

Schauffele was one of the most consistent golfers on the PGA Tour last year. He finished top 25 in 16 of his 18 events, and he also recorded seven top 10 finishes. He hasn’t won since claiming the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions last January, but he is due. Schauffele finished fifth at the US Open last month, and he picked up a runner-up finish last week at the CJ Cup. If not for a disastrous Saturday, he would have won the event, as he shot 66, 64, 66 on the other three days.
