2020 League of Legends World Championship Finals

The Summoner’s Cup will be awarded at the 2020 League of Legends World Championships in Shanghai this weekend. DAMWON Gaming are considered the favorites to take home the title, and they are acutely aware of their charge. They have discussed what it would mean to restore glory to the LCK by winning it all, as Korea was surpassed as the hegemon in international events by both China and Europe. After winning every World Championship between 2013 and 2017, no LCK team made it past the semifinals in each of the last two events.

Suning are looking to carry the banner for the LPL. The last two world champions have hailed from China as Invictus Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix dismantled their European counterparts, and they have to be respected given their run over the last month. Suning have toppled 2019 Mid-Season Invitational champion and fellow semifinalist G2 Esports, 2020 LPL Spring Split champion JD Gaming, and the pre-tournament favorite in 2020 LPL Summer Split champion Top Esports.

The initial League of Legends betting odds saw DAMWON Gaming open as a -220 favorite. The price on DAMWON rose to almost -300 before falling back to where it currently sits as of Friday afternoon. Let’s see who has the advantage in this series in a position by position breakdown.

Top Lane

Nuguri is the best top laner in the world. Full stop. DAMWON’s top laner has always had the mechanical skill, but he has showcased something new with his ability to support his team on champions like Ornn and Lulu. Unlike many young players, Nuguri doesn’t get rattled after a poor performance. His Fiora pick against G2 went about as poorly as possible, but he shook off the disappointment with great results in the next two games.

Playing tanks has been anathema to Bin. He repeatedly avoided playing Ornn in the LPL, and his performance on the champion in the semis wasn’t good. Bin has looked good on Jax, and he can play carries, but he isn’t likely to outclass the most talented top laner in the world. That inability to play tanks also limits Suning’s flexibility in drafts, putting them at a disadvantage against DAMWON.

Jungle

This should be a great match-up as Canyon has the highest KDA at Worlds coming into the finals. Canyon boasts an 8.1 KDA in 13 games per Games of Legends, and he is dealing out 21.9 percent of his team’s damage. He has prioritized Graves in the draft with nine games on that champion, but there are no concerns over Canyon having a shallow champion pool.

SofM might be the best jungler in the world though. StyleofMe has shined in the LPL throughout the 2020 year, carrying his team to victories with his hard farming out of the position. He has made Jarvan work in a meta where that champion is usually at a disadvantage, and his play on Graves and Kindred has been strong.

Mid Lane

Typically, mid lane is the most important position on any team, but this meta has de-emphasized mid laners. That could have put DAMWON at a bit of a disadvantage considering ShowMaker might be the best at his position in the world, but he hasn’t tried to overreach. He has facilitated his team with playmaking on Twisted Fate (17 KDA in five games), and his Syndra has been strong too.

Angel is often overlooked when you discuss LPL mid laners. Players like Knight, DoinB, and Rookie receive far more attention, but Angel has proven that he deserves to be mentioned in that company. He has really helped his team by taking Galio more often than any other champion, yet he also showed he can play an assassin with his Akali performance in the semis. His one game on Twisted Fate wasn’t good though, so that will create a tough decision in pick and ban for Suning.

Slight Edge: DAMWON

Bottom Lane

Ghost has the second-best KDA at Worlds this year. He was seen as the weak link of DAMWON, but he has played well and composed. His Jhin and Senna have been among the best at this year’s competition, and that’s a good thing considering the strength of those two champions. BeryL has been a very good playmaker too, especially on Leona.

We saw Huanfeng take the next step as an AD Carry by outclassing JackeyLove last weekend. Huanfeng has been one of the most talked about players of the tournament, and he seems set to be one of the world’s best bottom laners for a long time. He is paired with a long-time veteran in SwordArt, and the chemistry between this duo is fantastic.

Slight Edge: Suning

Prediction

In other metas, DAMWON would have a more decisive advantage, but not in this one. Jungle and bottom lane are being heavily emphasized, somewhat mitigating the advantages the favorites have in the mid lane and top lane. They should still win Worlds, but there is reason to be optimistic if you are a Suning fan.
