Best Bets to Win the 2020 Vivint Houston Open

We will see fans on the golf course once again for the first time in eight months at the Vivint Houston Open this weekend. The PGA Tour will allow 2,000 fans per day to enter Memorial Park in order to see some of the top golfers in the world take part in the tune-up for a rare fall Masters. Dustin Johnson is the overwhelming favorite to win this event with odds of +750, and no other golfer is lower than 16-1.

Event Details

Event: Vivint Houston Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: November 5-8, 2020

Location: Memorial Park Golf Course, Houston, Texas

Past Winners

2019: Lanto Griffin -14

2018: Ian Poulter -19

2017: Russell Henley -20

2016: Jim Herman -15

2015: J.B. Holmes -16

Many of the top golfers in the world will eschew this tournament in preparation for the Masters next week. However, Johnson will take part in this event after being sidelined due to COVID-19 since the US Open in September. He finished T6 at the US Open, and his fantastic finish at the end of the 2020 PGA Tour season makes him a big favorite in Houston. Johnson won two events and finished T2 in two others in his four tournaments prior to the US Open.

The Course

This course was redesigned last year, and it now has five par 3s and five par 5s. It is more than 7,400 yards, and the No. 8 can be difficult at 625 yards. There aren’t nearly as many bunkers as there were in the past, but the greens are much more difficult to stick. There is treacherous rough on the edge of the fairways, and designer Tom Doak made sure to keep golfers guessing somewhat when they putt with these undulating greens.

Value Play to Win the Event: Scottie Scheffler +2200

Scheffler didn’t take part in the Bermuda Championship last week, but he has been active on the PGA Tour as he aimed to get back into playing shape after contracting COVID-19. Scheffler missed the cut at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and he finished T52 at the CJ Cup, yet a nice T17 finish at the Zozo Championship has him live ahead of the Vivint Houston Open. He led the tournament in strokes gained off the tee, and he finished top five in three of his last four events to close out the 2020 season.

Top 5 Prop: Viktor Hovland +600

It’s only a matter of time before the young Norwegian puts it all together. He has made the cut in every event he has participated in since play resumed, and he finished T13 at the US Open and T12 at the CJ Cup. Hovland is one of the best long ball hitters on the PGA Tour, so he should be able to take advantage of Memorial Park’s length unlike other players.
