A very fortunate BetOnline.ag client recently did something that few of us will ever experience by hitting a 17 team parlay. The $19 ticket used a mixture of baseball sides and totals along with a half dozen NBA first half wagers and when they all came home winners the parlay player pocketed a cool $146,507.58!
One of the amazing aspects of a big score like this is all of the ‘little things’ that had to go the right way to produce 17 winning plays with no losses. Any sports bettor that has ever been on a winning run knows the feeling of getting all the right bounces and breaks. During streaks like that it seems that every desperation heave at the end of a basketball game goes in to cover the spread and that every missed play in a football game conspires to keep the final score ‘Under’ the total.

Even so, winning 17 consecutive games requires ‘next level’ intervention from the ‘gambling gods’. In the case of the recent parlay winner some of these ‘lucky breaks’ are evident just from looking at the ticket. Eleven of the 17 plays were baseball games all with ‘listed pitchers’. The first lucky break is that all of the ‘listed pitchers’ were able to make the start. If even one of the starting pitchers feels stiff during warmups or comes up with a blister before the start of the game the bet becomes ‘no action’ and the 17 team parlay becomes a 16 team parlay. Three plays were baseball totals and there are countless ways that those can go south but the lucky parlay player got the Dodgers/Rockies, Yankees/Orioles and the Mets/Nationals games ‘Over’ the total with ease.
Two of the 17 plays were NBA first half pointspread plays and the remaining four were NBA first half moneyline plays. Basketball is an extremely challenging sport to handicap and particularly the NBA. It’s even more difficult to handicap late season NBA–playoff bound teams rest starters, teams that are eliminated start ‘phoning it in’ and it’s exceedingly difficult to know where teams will make a strong effort and where they won’t. This difficulty is magnified with a first half wager–it’s not uncommon to see a good team come out flat in the first half and put it together after the break to steal a win. Alternately, you’ll frequently see NBA teams that go into the halftime break with a slim lead which they extend into a wider margin in the second half. The parlay player got every first half to go in his favor including a first half play on Houston -10.5. A double digit halftime lead is never a sure thing, even against the lowly Phoenix Suns but the Rockets came out firing and led 77-47 at the half.
There were a few ‘sweats’ along the way. In baseball, the Phillies managed to hold on for a 2-1 win over the Twins. The Atlanta Braves watched the Miami Marlins come back from a 3-2 deficit and tie the game in the top of the 9th. No extra innings were necessary, however, as the Braves scratched one across in the bottom half of the inning for a 4-3 victory. In the NBA, a first half play on Oklahoma City -180 was a nailbiter but ended up winning with a point to spare as the Thunder went into the break with a 62-60 advantage over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The player was also fortunate to have a first half play on the Utah Jazz -375 over the Los Angeles Lakers and not a full game play–the Jazz led at the half but the Lakers came back in the second half to win outright.
When the smoke cleared, however, the lucky BetOnline.ag parlay player had 17 plays and 17 wins for a big payday and a Sunday full of sports betting excitement that he’ll never forget!
