Key Matchup in Spanish Soccer as Mallorca Visits Deportivo de La Coruna

The action in European soccer is winding down for the year but there are still some crucial games to be played. This Spanish Segunda Division matchup between Mallorca and Deportivo de La Coruna is a perfect case in point. Both teams have two games remaining following this contest and both have an identical goal: to make the Promotion Playoff for a chance to return to La Liga in the 2019-2020 season. It’s also the only contest on Monday’s Spanish soccer odds board.

This contest will be played on Deportivo’s home field at Estadio Riazor where they have lost only three Segunda Division games this season. Then again, they drew 8 against 8 wins and this high rate of draws on their home field is clearly indicative of ‘missed opportunities’. A couple more wins and they would be safely inside for playoff qualification at this stage. Instead, they are in 7th place and need to finish at least 6th to qualify for the Promotion Playoffs. Typical of their sloppy play at home all season they are winless in their last 3 here at Estadio Riazor with two losses and a draw. In those games, they conceded 5 goals and scored only 2. They also missed a chance to pick up points in their last away contest where they were beaten 1-0 by a Lugo team fighting to avoid relegation.

Mallorca is in significantly better recent form with a 4-1-1 overall mark in their last 6. They are a reasonable 1-1-1 in their last three away and their goal differential in that timeframe is all level with 3 for and 3 against. They are currently in 5th place but as there are still two games to play they are not secure there. Heading in to the final fixtures of the year there are six teams looking to secure one of four Promotion Playoff spots and something will hae to give. Mallorca is 1 point back of 4th place Malaga and 4 back of third place Albacete. In their rear view mirror, they are 3 up on 6th place Cadiz, 7 up on Deportivo and 7 up on 8th place Real Oviedo who has at least a slight chance to qualify.

Mallorca’s away performance this season is something of a concern with 4 wins 7 draws and 8 losses. Since Deportivo hasn’t been anything great at home lately this matchup looks very close to even. 5 of Mallorca’s last 7 games have seen 2 or fewer goals scored with Deportivo playing to 2 or fewer goals in 4 of their last 7. In the earlier matchup between these two teams only one goal was scored as Mallorca prevailed 1-0 at Iberostar Estadi. A lot at stake for both teams and there’s every reason to expect a similarly close contest this time around.
