The top of the English Premier League table in the early going is playing to form. Liverpool is running roughshod over everyone with 15 points and play at Chelsea on Sunday. Manchester City is next with 13 points and made a definitive statement on Saturday as they thrashed bottom of the table Watford 8-0. If there is a surprise at the top of the table a half dozen or so games into the Premiership Season it is AFC Bournemouth who is in fourth place with 10 points after a 14th place finish last year.

Once you get outside of the top four, however, nothing is clear. The next 10 teams have either 7 or 8 points and are separated by goal differential. This puts Tottenham Hotspur in fifth with 8 points and a +4 differential and Everton in 14th place with 7 points and a -4 differential. The two principals in today’s match are in that mix. Manchester United is in sixth place with 8 points and a +4 differential while West Ham United is in 11th with 8 and a -1 differential.

The biggest problem for Man U has been scoring goals. They got a 1-0 win over Astana in Europa League play on Thursday but that represented the 5th straight contest in all competitions where they’ve not scored more than a single goal. In fact, the 4-0 opening game thumping of Chelsea is their only multi-goal game of the season. Man U is winless in their last 8 in all competitions on the road. In Premier League play, Manchester United is 2-2-1 on the season but are still without an away victory going 0-2-0 with two goals scored and conceded away from Old Trafford.

Curious that the soccer betting odds have Man U installed as a road favorite given their recent struggles in their travels. West Ham has won 5 of 8 Premier League games at London Stadium. They’ve also scored two or more in 6 of 8. They’re now unbeaten in five straight in all competitions. They’ve only lost 1 of their last five games against Manchester United on their home pitch. Until the ‘Red Devils’ show some form away from Old Trafford we’d much rather take the half goal with the home team.
