2021 League of Legends World Championship Group Stage Betting Preview

There have been few surprises at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship so far. Eastern teams from Korea and China have dominated their Western counterparts from Europe and North America, and there is now a real chance that no Western team makes the knockout rounds. Currently, the eight quarterfinalists would include four LPL (China) teams, three LCK (Korea) teams, and a PCS team in PSG Talon. If the West is going to break through anywhere, it will likely be in Group D as both MAD Lions and Team Liquid have looked competitive.

2021 League of Legends World Championship Group Stage Betting Odds

Odds to Win Group C – October 17, 2021

Royal Never Give Up -1250
PSG Talon +600
Hanwha Life +1400
Fnatic +8000

It’s a shame that bottom laner Upset had to leave Fnatic because of a family emergency just before the start of Worlds. Upset was arguably the best bottom laner in Europe this summer, and he left some pretty big shoes to fill in his absence. Fnatic were a sneaky pick to win Group C before Upset departed, but they have yet to win a game with replacement Bean in the starting lineup.

Fnatic can be the kingmaker of Group C though. While they have yet to win a game, they were competitive against PSG Talon in their last match. They have some innovative team comps and a talented top laner in Adam and a brilliant support in Hylissang.

Royal Never Give Up will probably win this group, but RNG should not be more than a -1000 favorite. They are getting away with playing through top laner Xiaohu, and he has taken Syndra and Lucian into the lane. That can be countered, and this team is very dependent on him.

Both PSG Talon and Hanwha Life have the potential to knock off RNG. PSG Talon have a great top laner of their own in Hanabi and a veteran mid laner in Maple. Meanwhile, Hanwha Life boast the incredibly talented Chovy, and he is finally getting some help from his teammates.

Odds to Win Group D – October 18, 2021

LNG Esports +150
Gen.G +150
MAD Lions +300
Team Liquid +1000

This should be the most fun group to watch for the second round robin. Group D was the most wide-open group once the draw concluded, and it’s the only group where every team has at least one win.

LNG Esports and Gen.G are the favorites, but neither team has been superb. LNG have depended upon Tarzan and top laner Ale playing strong push champions, and the bottom lane is very beatable. Icon, Light, and Iwandy all have a kill percentage under 45%, showing how this team plays.

Gen.G have been an up-and-down team all year. Veteran bottom laner Ruler is a former world champion and leads the team with a 7.5 KDA, but the play in the top lane and support hasn’t been great.

That gives MAD Lions and Team Liquid room to break through. MAD Lions are a tempting pick at +300 to win Group D given their chemistry, and they should fare better now that they have a stronger read of the meta.
