Two of the most successful teams in the history of the Champions League will meet for this year’s final this weekend. Real Madrid is the most decorated team in the history of this competition with 13 titles, while Liverpool’s six titles have the Reds tied with Bayern Munich for third-most all-time. However, while Real Madrid have won each of the last eight finals they have entered, they are underdogs to Liverpool in this match by the soccer betting odds.

Liverpool came extremely close to potentially winning an unprecedented quadruple in Paris this Saturday. The Reds won the FA Cup and EFL Cup, and they were second to Manchester City in the Premier League table. The Citizens were down 2-0 to Aston Villa on Decision Day, and anything but a win coupled with a Liverpool victory would have resulted in the Reds winning the Premier League. Unfortunately, City scored three goals in five minutes to roar back and win the domestic title, depriving Liverpool of a shot at history.
Still, there’s plenty of reason to think that Liverpool is the best club team in Europe this year. The Reds won all six of their games in the Champions League Group Stage, and they proceeded to cruise to wins in the knockout rounds over Inter Milan, Benfica, and Villarreal after winning the first leg by multiple goals against all three teams.
Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are two of the best forwards in England, and Diogo Jota is a strong complementary forward up top. Skipper Jordan Henderson has lost a half-step, but he is still an elite midfielder, and Naby Keita is finally starting to come along too. The defense is led by world-class center back Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson might be the best goalkeeper in the world.
Real Madrid cruised to another La Liga title, but they were exceptionally fortunate in Champions League play. They were stunned at home by tiny Sheriff Tiraspol in the group stage, and they were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16. It seemed likely that PSG would advance after taking a 2-0 lead on aggregate in the second leg, but some dreadful PSG defending gave Karim Benzema golden opportunities and he netted a hat trick in the span of 18 minutes in the second half.
They had to hold off a comeback from Chelsea in the quarterfinals, as the Blues took a 3-0 lead in the Bernabeu to take the lead on aggregate. Fortunately, Rodrygo scored in the 80th minute to force extra time before Benzema once again was the hero. That paled in comparison to what we saw in the semifinals though, as Manchester City had a two-goal advantage in the 90th minute before Rodrygo scored two goals in two minutes to send the Bernabeu into an absolute frenzy. Benzema sent the club back to the Champions League final in extra time, making fans think this is a dream season.
There are major concerns in the back line with Real Madrid. Rodrygo has come through with goals at key times, but their inability to hold elite teams down in the Champions League is a major problem. Real Madrid lacks truly elite defensive midfielders, and Thibaut Courtois has needed to come up with some big saves for the club to stay alive. That makes Liverpool the play to win the Champions League on Saturday.
