The 2021 FedEx Cup Playoffs will kick off this week with The Northern Trust. Only the top 125 golfers on the PGA Tour were invited to this event, and the competition will be fierce to qualify for next week’s BMW Championship. Virtually all the top golfers in the world will be taking part in this event, but Jon Rahm is a resounding favorite at 9-1. The golfer with the next lowest odds is Jordan Speith at 16-1.
Event Details
Event: The Northern Trust
Category: PGA Tour – FedEx Cup Playoffs
Date: August 19-22, 2021
Location: Liberty National Golf Club, Jersey City, New Jersey
Past Winners
2020: Dustin Johnson -30
2019: Patrick Reed -16
2018: Bryson DeChambeau -18
2017: Dustin Johnson -13
2016: Patrick Reed -9
We saw Dustin Johnson smash the tournament record by shooting 30-under at TPC Boston last year. Johnson bested the field by 11 strokes, finishing the event with a 63 on the final day to punctuate his victory. That was his third victory at The Northern Trust as he won in 2011 and bested Jordan Spieth in a playoff in 2017.
The other golfer with multiple wins in this tournament is Patrick Reed. Reed won the 2019 edition of this event at Liberty National, beating Abraham Ancer by a stroke, and he secured the win in 2016 when The Northern Trust was held at Bethpage Black.
The Course
This will be the fourth time that Liberty National Golf Club across from New York City will host this tournament. Heath Slocum was victorious at the first event here in 2009, besting Tiger Woods and three others by one stroke. Adam Scott grabbed the title in 2013, as Tiger Woods and three other golfers once again lost by a single shot.
Wind can be a factor at Liberty National, but it isn’t expected to play a big part in this weekend’s tournament. That could lead to low scores, and we saw the average score here drop by nearly a stroke from 2013 to 2019.
Best Bet to Win The Northern Trust: Collin Morikawa +1800
The last 12 months have been great for 24-year-old Collin Morikawa. He won his first major by claiming the 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, and he claimed the WGC Workday Championship in late February before winning his second major with The Open Championship last month. Morikawa struggled at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational two weeks ago, but he had four straight T4 finishes prior to that finish.
Value Play to Win The Northern Trust: Abraham Ancer +3500
Abraham Ancer picked up his first PGA Tour win two weeks ago at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He never shot higher than a 68 throughout the tournament, and that consistency is key for the 2019 runner-up on this course. Ancer has four T5 finishes in nine PGA Tour events since May, so he is worth a shot at 35-1 given his form and last performance on this course.
