Best Bets at the 2021 US Open

Beautiful Torrey Pines will be the site of the US Open for the second time this weekend. Tiger Woods gave us a major for the ages back in 2008, and anything close to that wild finish would leave fans buzzing on Sunday (or Monday). This course has been home to a PGA Tour event (currently the Farmers Insurance Open) since 1968, so players will have familiarity with Torrey Pines’ intricacies.

Event Details

Event: US Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: June 17-20, 2021

Location: Torrey Pines, San Diego, California

Past Winners

2020: Bryson DeChambeau -6

2019: Gary Woodland -13

2018: Brooks Koepka +1
2017: Brooks Koepka -16

2016: Dustin Johnson -4

Jon Rahm is a distinct favorite to win his first major this weekend. Rahm was all set to win the Memorial two weeks ago, but he was forced to withdraw after testing positive for COVID. He had posted consecutive rounds at 65 and 64 to be 18-under, and winner Patrick Cantlay finished just 13-under for the tournament.

Rahm hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since winning the Memorial last year, but he has hung around the top of the leaderboard at the biggest tournaments this season. He finished T7 at the November Masters, the Sentry Tournament of Champions, and the Farmers Insurance Open. He was T9 at THE PLAYERS Championship, T5 at the Masters, and T8 at the PGA Championship, so he is primed for a big win.

The Course

During the Farmers Insurance Open, this course is a par-72. However, Torrey Pines will be a par-71 for the US Open. The sixth hole is a 564-yard par five during the annual event, but it will be adjusted to be a 515-yard par four for this week’s major.

Torrey Pines is a public course owned by the city of San Diego. It has a North Course and a South Course, and it is the South Course that will be used for the US Open this weekend. The South Course is usually 7,802 yards for the Farmers Insurance Open, but it will be shortened to 7,685 yards as a par-71.

Value Play to Win the Tournament: Justin Rose +6600

Although he missed the cut at last year’s Farmers Insurance Open, Justin Rose’s performance on this course in the three previous years makes him worth a shot at 66-1 to win the US Open. Rose won the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open with a 267 over the course of four days, and he finished T8 in 2018 and T4 in 2017. He finished T7at the Masters and T8 at the PGA Championship, so he should have lower odds than where he’s currently sitting.

Top 5 Prop: Rory McIlroy +450

In three previous trips to the Farmers Insurance Open, Rory McIlroy has finished T16, T3, and T5. McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship last month, and he finished T8 at last year’s US Open. He hasn’t won a major since 2014, but he has a decent chance to contend at a place where he is comfortable.
