For the fourth straight year, the Rocket Mortgage Classic will follow the 3M Open as the PGA Tour brings top level golf to the Midwest. Both tournaments were created in 2019, and although they usually don’t draw the truly elite golfers, they are extremely competitive events because they are two of the last three tournaments before the end of the ‘regular season’ in golf. Cameron Davis is the defending champion at Detroit Golf Club, but he is not considered one of the favorites at 30-1 per the golf betting odds.
Instead, Patrick Cantlay is considered the favorite. Cantlay has been superb over the last three months with five straight T15 finishes and a win and a runner-up finish in April. Last week’s 3M Open winner Tony Finau, Will Zalatoris, Cameron Young, and Max Homa are on the short list of favorites too.

The Course
Detroit Golf Club is a par 72 course that checks in at 7,370 yards. Weather is expected to be largely fine throughout the tournament, although wind could be an issue on Thursday and Friday, and that means the winner will likely finish at around -20. Most of the tournament is played on the longer North Course as the South Course is a par 68 that is under 6,000 yards.
Although this is seen as one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour, the par 5s were a little tricky last year. The average score on par 5s during last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic was a shade over 4.7, and that ranked among the higher numbers last season.
Best Bet to Win the Rocket Mortgage Classic: Will Zalatoris +1600
It felt good to cash with Tony Finau last week, so let’s ride that high by going with another one of the favorites this week. Will Zalatoris is tied with Finau as the player with the second lowest odds to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic at 16-1, and there is plenty of reason to believe he can secure his first PGA Tour win on Sunday.
Zalatoris has come painfully close to winning for the first time this season. He has three T2 finishes and eight T10 finishes, and three of those performances were at majors. A 73 on the first round of The Open Championship knocked him out of contention early, but he has more command of his game stateside. He took last week off, and he has a great chance of cashing since he has six T6 finishes in his last eight tournaments held in the United States.
Value Play to Win the Rocket Mortgage Classic: Troy Merritt +7500
We haven’t seen Troy Merritt win a PGA Tour event in seven years, but he has performed very well at this event after failing to make the cut in the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic. Merritt was in contention in 2020 until a final round 71 led to an 8th place finish, and he lost a three-way playoff here last year. His best performance this season was a T4 at the Valero Texas Open, but he is certainly worth a lottery ticket this week at 75-1.
