Deiveson Figueiredo will be making history this week at UFC 256. He defended his flyweight belt for the first time at UFC 255 three weeks ago, and his second title defense this week represents the shortest amount of time ever between two title defenses in the promotion.
Figueiredo’s appearance on this card was needed considering the juggling that has went into UFC 256. Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns were originally supposed to headline this event, and Amanda Nunes and Petr Yan were tied to this event last month as well. However, Usman, Nunes, and Yan all had to pull out leading the UFC without a title fight to headline the card until Figueiredo stepped in against Brandon Moreno.
UFC 256 will be held at UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. The prelims for UFC 256 will kick off at 8 p.m. ET, and the main event is slated to start at 10 p.m. ET. All the action will be available exclusively through ESPN Plus via PPV.
UFC 255: Figueiredo vs. Moreno Betting Odds
Deiveson Figueiredo -300
Brandon Moreno +250
Moreno is a considerable underdog per the UFC betting odds entering the last title fight of 2020. He is still relatively young at the age of 27, and he only entered the UFC last September. His first bout was against Askar Askarov, and he had to settle for a draw. However, he secured unanimous decision victories over Kai Kara-France and Jussier Formiga in his next two fights before picking up a finish with a first-round TKO of Brandon Royval at UFC 255 three weeks ago.
The champion has had a year to remember. Figueiredo has won five straight fights coming into UFC 256. He beat Joseph Benavidez by second-round TKO back in February, and he won the flyweight title by submitting Benavidez in the first round back in July. Figueiredo survived an early flurry to earn a submission of Alex Perez a few weeks ago, and he might be primed to usher in another reign of dominance in this division. It’s hard to go against him even at this price.
Tony Ferguson -165
Charles Oliveira +145
The last time we saw Tony Ferguson, he suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 in Jacksonville. Ferguson had won 12 straight fights over the span of eight years prior to that defeat, so he is expected to knock off Charles Oliveira and prove that he deserves to be reckoned with in the lightweight division.
Oliveira isn’t too much of an underdog though, largely due to his prowess on the ground. He has won 19 of his 29 fights by submission, securing wins by chokes in five of his last seven matches. That makes him an intriguing pick, although he has yet to beat a big name opponent.
Mackenzie Dern -200
Virna Jandiroba +170
As a former grappler, Mackenzie Dern has a great ground game. Six of her nine wins as an MMA fighter have come via submission, so Virna Jandiroba isn’t likely to beat her on the mat. Dern’s one loss came by decision to Amanda Ribas last October, and Ribas is one of the top up-and-comers in the strawweight division.
Jandiroba is 16-1 with her one loss coming against Carla Esparza in her UFC debut last April. However, she spent her first 14 fights with other MMA promotions, and she only recently came to the top tier. They delay might be indicative of her true talent, so Dern is the play here.
