Argentina (-333) Massive Favorites to Win Group A at Copa

Group A is the most lopsided table at Copa America, based on betting odds. Argentina, ranked

number one in the world, are the overwhelming favorites to win the group and the tournament.

But could there be the possibility of an upset? We’ll explore the other three team’s chances of

pulling off the upset and winning the group.

Argentina -333 (Rank: #1)

They are the defending World Cup and Copa América champions, and have arguably the

greatest player of all-time on their squad. They come into this tournament on a five match win

streak and have won 13 of 14 since winning the World Cup back in December 2022. While the

odds are short, Argentina shouldn’t have any problem against Canada to open the tournament.

All eyes will be on Messi, who is likely playing in his last Copa, and no better way to go out than

repeating as champions.

Chile +425 (Rank: #42)

After winning back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016, Chile hasn’t been able to

return to the final four in the last two tournaments. They did win this event the last time it was

played in the U.S but have been inconsistent over the last two years, unable to win consecutive

games. They could advance from the group, but likely in the runner-up spot.

Peru +1200 (Rank: #32)

Peru has always been considered a sleeper team at most tournaments. They’re another South

American team that is consistently inconsistent. Peru hasn’t done well recently in World Cup

qualifying, with just 2 draws in 5 matches. In 2024, La Rojiblanca went unbeaten in four

matches but the three wins came against soccer minnows (Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, El

Salvador). They will need to step-up their game in a big way if they have any chance of

challenging for top spot.

Canada +1400 (Rank: #49)

Since the 2022 World Cup, Canada Soccer has been in disarray and had to win a playoff

against Trinidad & Tobago to qualify. New coach Jesse Marsch hasn’t had much time to

prepare and recently got outclassed by the Netherlands before a nil-nil draw against France,

which added some optimism. This team is led by Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, who will

be relied on heavily to score up front. A best case scenario for the Canadians is getting through

as runner-up, but winning this group, the odds are stacked against them.
