Brazil Favorites, But Colombia Could Upset Group D at Copa
When you look at Group D, it’s fairly simple, Brazil and Colombia, and then the other two teams.
There’s nothing to suggest that both teams won’t get through but the question is, who finishes
atop the group? Brazil has been dominant at the Copa America, winning 9 titles. But this squad
is much different than the past. Will they continue their reign or is this the year another country
dethrones them in the group stage?
Brazil -250 (Rank: #15)
They are always dangerous regardless of who’s on the roster and once again Brazil is one of
the favorites at Copa, chasing its tenth title. No Neymar as the 32-year old is out with a knee
injury but Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo are expected to carry the load offensively, along with teenage
sensation Endrick. New coach Dorival Júnior has only been in charge since January and has
two wins and two draws in four matches. Here’s where the intrigue comes into play. Brazilian
legend Ronaldinho criticized the roster selection, calling them the ‘worst team’ and he would
boycott the tournament. Although he did walk back his comments saying it was all part of an
advertising campaign for a deodorant brand and weren’t his own words. Still, it makes you
wonder if there may be some value on another team.
Colombia +250 (Rank: #15)
Colombia seems like the sexy pick of late and likely because of its recent form. A four-game
win streak in 2024, victories against Spain and the Americans. And if you go back further,
Colombia’s last loss, against Argentina in February 2022. An undefeated streak of 23 games
with wins against world powers, Brazil, Germany, and Mexico.
The duo of Jefferson Lerma and Daniel Munoz will be key players for the coaching staff and
anything less than reaching the knockout stage would be a major disappointment. And yes, its
Brazil, but Colombia has a great chance to win this group, and with these odds, it may be worth
a shot.
Paraguay +1400 (Rank: #15)
Any chance for Paraguay relies mostly on their defense because this team can’t score goals. In
their last four matches, Paraguay has scored no goals, and managed two scoreless draws. And
dating back to September, Paraguay has scored just one goal in either matches. Good luck
trying to find the back of the net against Colombia and Brazil and keeper Carlos Coronel will see
a lot of shots come his way.
Costa Rica +2500 (Rank: #15)
There’s not much expected by Costa Rica as it’s more of a rebuilding phase for the program.
Keylor Navas, one of the country’s best ever, has retired and this side is overmatched against
some powerful nations. Costa Rica was recently beaten 6-1 over two matches by Panama, so
that tells you where this team stacks up in the group, and overall.
