Brazil set to face Uruguay in quarterfinals
In one match, footy fans are salivating as they await this clash of two titans on the pitch when
we see Uruguay take on Brazil in the quarters. It definitely feels like it should be at least a
semifinal match but we’ll take it a stage early. Colombia finishing atop of their group was
definitely a surprise and the fact that Panama made it to the quarter finals at all was pretty
unexpected for many.
Uruguay vs Brazil, Saturday, July 6th
Uruguay enters the knockout stage after going 3-for-3 in the group stage where they outscored
the opposition 9-1. That included wins over the United States and Panama which solidified their
spot at the top of the table. They’re led by Darwin Nunez and Maximiliano Araujo who lead the
team with two goals a piece. They have trust in the net thanks to keeper Sergio Rochet who has
two clean sheets and looks to be busy against Brazil. The nation hasn’t found their way out of
the quarterfinals since the 2011 iteration of the tournament when they ran the table.
While it’s not a surprise that they’ve made it out of the group stage, it is a surprise that they
didn’t finish on top. The Brazilians are coming off a hard fought match against Colombia to
round out group play. It went down to the wire but with a draw, they find themselves lining up
across from Uruguay in the knockout stage. They will be without key forward Vinicius Junior who
is out after one too many yellow cards. As usual, much was expected for Selecao, especially
after finishing as the runner-ups at the previous tournament and taking the whole thing in 2019.
Anything less than hoisting a trophy will be seen as failure for the fifth ranked squad.

Colombia vs Panama, Saturday, July 6th
Colombia came out of a battle with Brazil to cap off the group stage this week. The draw gives
them a 26-match unbeaten streak heading into the quarterfinal round of the Copa America.
While they were already through on points, finishing ahead of Brazil allowed them an easier
path as they avoided Uruguay en route to a possible semi final date. They will be without
midfielder Jefferson Lerma who racked up too many yellow cards prior to the knockout phase.
Crystal Palace defender, Daniel Munoz leads the team with two goals from the backend but

Panama wasn’t picked to finish in the top two of their group. No, that spot was reserved for the
United States. Aside from a loss to Uruguay during the group phase, Panama did their job,
winning two out of three matches. That includes defeating the United States 2-1 thanks to Jose
Fajardo’s second goal of the tournament. The Panamanians are in tough against Colombia but
they’re playing with house money at this point.
