Less than a week after Tiger Woods secured his historic, record-tying 82nd win at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan, the PGA Tour makes the short trip to Shanghai, China and the Sheshan Golf Club for this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions event. We took the time to break down the field for this tournament in order to identify the best bets on the board based on their golf betting odds. THE FAVORITE
RORY MCILROY +600
McIlroy is coming off a third-place finish at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP behind only Tiger Woods and Hideki Matsuyama last week. Now he heads to China as the favorite to win this event at +600. While the value isn’t great by any means, McIlroy has all of the tools to contend for the outright victory once again this week. It’s easy to understand why the oddsmakers have him where he is but there are some more intriguing options on the board for this event.
NEXT IN LINE
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA +1100
The 2016 WGC-HSBC Champions winner is listed behind only McIlroy according to the odds to win this tournament outright. That alone suggests the oddsmakers understand he will be in the mix. Matsuyama put on a heck of a show before ultimately falling just short at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in his home country last week. Remember that before his runner-up finish at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, he placed third at the CJ Cup too. He’s been playing very well of late.
XANDER SCHAUFFELE +1400
Schauffele will be in tough to double down and win the WGC-HSBC Champions event for the second year in a row. However, considering the underlying numbers, it’s impossible to overlook him as a legitimate contender. Schauffele was the only golfer to shoot in the 60’s in three of the four rounds at this tournament a year ago. He is one of the best in the field off the tee and we know that he understands what it takes to win at this event. If you’re nervous about him winning back-to-back, a Top 10 prop might be a safer option.
JUSTIN ROSE +1600
Rose will make his highly anticipated return to the PGA Tour following a two-month break following the conclusion of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. While the oddsmakers might be anticipating a bit of rust this week, there is a very good chance Rose picks up right where he left off last season and delivers a championship worthy performance. Rose has an outstanding resume at this event, including a win here in 2017 and a third-place finish here last season.
SLEEPER PICKS
FRANCESCO MOLINARI +5000
Sticking with the theme of targeting golfers that have had success at this tournament in the past, Molinari stands out for a couple of reasons. First of all, he won this event back in 2010 when he fired a 19-under for the victory. Second, the former WGC-HSBC Champions event winner is available at +5000 odds, which is incredible value. While consistency has been an issue for the Italian, he makes for an excellent sleeper pick to surprise this week.
BUBBA WATSON +10000
Looking even further down the list of sleeper picks to win the WGC-HSBC Champions event, Watson is another former champion that stands out based on his long odds. The 2010 WGC-HSBC Champions winner is listed at +10000 odds, which makes sense considering his recent struggles. Still, it might not be a bad idea to throw a small play on Watson with the hope that he can surprise this week in China.
