Champions League Soccer: Chelsea at Ajax

UEFA Champions League action on Wednesday features an interesting Group H contest between English Premier League mainstays Chelsea and Dutch Eredivise leaders Ajax. The two teams will battle at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam with Ajax currently on top of the Group H table with a 2-0-0 record and 6 points. Valencia and Chelsea each have 3 points with the Spanish La Liga side currently holding the edge due to a 1-0 win over The Blues in the Group H opener. French Ligue 1 team Lille is bringing up the rear with a record of 0-0-2.

Frank Lampard has done a solid job in his first year at Chelsea particularly considering the transfer ban that is in place. Chelsea has won 4 of their last 5 in Premier League play with the lone setback a hard fought 2-1 loss to top of the table Liverpool. The team has also won 5 straight in all competitions including a 2-1 Champions League win over Lille and a 7-1 beatdown of League Two Grimbsy Town in League Cup action. Chelsea now has a record of 5-2-2 in Premier League action with 17 points and have moved up to fourth place on the table. They’re even with Leicester City who holds a 3 goal advantage on the differential.

Ajax has been very strong in Eredivisie play to date and have yet to lose a game in league competition. They’re 8-2-0 for 26 points and have looked good on both ends scoring 31 goals and conceding only 7. They’ve dominated at home in Eredivisie play with a 4-0-0 record scoring 16 and conceding only 1. Like Chelsea, they’ve also won five straight in all competitions and thumped Valencia 3-0 in their last Champions League action. Ajax reached the Champions League semifinals last year and due to some losses of personnel wasn’t expected to be quite as strong this season. That hasn’t been the case–they’re now unbeaten in 19 games since their upset loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the Champions League semis. They’ve won 9 of 10 including 5 straight and are on a 9 game home winning streak. They’ve scored 2+ goals in 12 consecutive home games across all competitions.

Chelsea has a few players on the injury list including Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger but the biggest absentees here will be N’Golo Kante and Ross Barkley. Lampard expressed hope that Kante and Barkley would be fit for weekend Premiership play against Burnley. Ajax has no significant injuries. Ajax is favored here based on their Champions League success last year and their strong performance at home but there’s every reason to think that Chelsea should be able to give them a competitive game. Look for an aggressive, attacking style from both sides.
