Frank Lampard Returns To Chelsea As Manager

Frank Lampard is a Chelsea legend. He’s considered one of the best midfielders of his generation and among a variety of records he holds he has the notable distinction of being Chelsea’s all time leading goal scorer with 211 in all competitions. He won three Premiership titles while a player at Chelsea and was the team’s leader during what is considered the best run of excellence in franchise history.

On Thursday, Lampard announced that he was returning to Stamford Bridge, this time as the team’s manager. He will replace Maurizio Sarri who saw some success during a tumultuous year managing Chelsea but eventually opted to return to Italy. It’s been a busy couple of days for Lampard–he was spotted at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and was confirmed as the new Chelsea manager on Thursday morning. He met the media on Thursday afternoon and on Friday morning flew to Dublin for the team’s first training session in preparation for the 2019-2020 English Premier League season. The first photos of Lampard leading a conditioning drill were met with considerable enthusiasm among Chelsea supporters on social media with the suggestion that this is the start of a new era for the team.

Lampard is aware of the huge amount of pressure that comes with his new role. It’s similar to being the head coach of Notre Dame or the manager of the New York Yankees–the expectations of the team ownership, fans and the media are sky high. Lampard received high marks for his performance at Derby City in the Football Championship last season but even before that his name had come up as a candidate for the Chelsea job. Lampard has already drafted a number of his assistants including Jody Morris, Chris Jones, Eddie Newton, Joe Edwards and former Blues goalkeper Peter Cech. Lampard’s former Chelsea teammates Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele have also been rumored to be joining the team as assistants.

The hiring of Lampard has been met with much enthusiasm from supporters but it hasn’t produced much of a change in the English Premier League futures odds. Chelsea remains the fourth choice in betting at +2500. The odds hint that the 2019-2020 Premiership season could be similar to last year with Manchester City and Liverpool running away from the rest of the field.
